CHINATOWN, NY

Friday afternoon in Chinatown.

Losing light. Shots getting fuzzy.

Note to self:  sometimes living the experience outweighs capturing it perfectly.

You're SO right Keener about "LIVING THE EXPERIENCE" and all your shots really immerse us (or me at least) in the CHINATOWN experience!! gawd I can smell the fish the roast pork the almond cookies the veggies the herbs-- and hey that's MY red china girl dress in the window- did you have any flied lice?? lol very colorful tab, vibrant, alive.
ps get chucked?? WOT?

Wasaaaabiiiiii--Chuckie T's. Converse.
Pkeener said at 10:48 p.m. on Oct 15, 2008:
Leftie, you nailed it. sights smells vibrations. it was alive. i didnt take half the photos i could have...Yes, that is your dress. You guessed. and the amiga's too

Hey Michelle! thak you! i was trying to convey that feeling. Its an arduous tak. Chinatown just cant be captured in its fullest.
Pkeener said at 10:52 p.m. on Oct 15, 2008:
YEP. You got it, Meegs. For you.
Lifequest22 said at 10:59 p.m. on Oct 15, 2008:
Chinatown lives right here. Chaotic yes--which is the vibrancy of Chinatown. Every photo nails the excitement of the district. Some of my favs: Mulberry Street; Thief; Biden/Palin newspaper; the chinese herb shop and of course the Chucked. X O. Love your choice of tab colors. Mott Street on the van--isn't that one of the main drags there.

Brings back lots of childhood memories. I have been there many times over the last forty plus years.I always get a kick out of visiting there. If those alleys and basements could talk.......
Pkeener said at 11:19 p.m. on Oct 15, 2008:
Hey James! thank you! i had a lot more of the basements, but didnt want to freak everybody out. the delivery guys were so amused that i would be shooting the cellars...or maybe they were wondering if i was looking for contraband! I can't wait to go back
Lifequest22 said at 11:34 p.m. on Oct 15, 2008:
Thanks, Pam.
AliDar said at 11:34 p.m. on Oct 15, 2008:

Pkeener said at 11:51 p.m. on Oct 15, 2008:
Hey Pumpkin! Glad you like it. Chinatown is very COOL. I think I need it, lefite, thanks. You never know who or what you will run into there.
Abking said at 11:52 p.m. on Oct 15, 2008:
Love the hustle and bustle of this, life spilling over. I wonder what the "Thief" sign is all about?
Pkeener said at 11:55 p.m. on Oct 15, 2008:
Allan! It was all over the place, but since I don't speak Chinese, i couldn't get the story. believe me, i asked!
Leftofcenter said at 11:56 p.m. on Oct 15, 2008:
its when the store's camera catches someone "suspect" on tape, they post the pictures outside to seek the help of the public, if they recognize the "THIEF" (that was a long explanation for a almost midnight comment!!)
Pkeener said at 11:58 p.m. on Oct 15, 2008:
Thank you Annelies, for translating!
Lifequest22 said at 12:00 a.m. on Oct 16, 2008:
I always am fascinated by those basemnt stairs.
What lurks below. And sometimes they lead to restaurants, which is cool.
Abking said at 12:01 a.m. on Oct 16, 2008:
Yeah, thanks, Annelies. It makes a good photo within the photo.
Debdog said at 12:03 a.m. on Oct 16, 2008:

Leftie, wot? NYC-cool...LOL
Clydo said at 2:14 a.m. on Oct 16, 2008:
My Chinese collegue read it and it translates roughly like everyone needs to be careful of this person dressed as a woman(?) stealing phones. Dunno how people can beware as you can't see the face! ;) The whole place looks so much like Bangkok!
Charlespop said at 2:40 a.m. on Oct 16, 2008:
Cool !
Wildthing said at 3:51 a.m. on Oct 16, 2008:
A walk on the wild side, into another culture. I can almost sense the hustle, bustle, noise & smells. Wonder what the old dear sitting on the step outside 106-8 Mulberry St is thinking...Maybe having a stroll into Little Italy for a pizza!! :)
21-gramm said at 4:06 a.m. on Oct 16, 2008:

Thank you E!! How cool of you to ask for us. I was so amused, too, that on all of the signs, no face!
Thank you all! The experience was so fantastic. A Kaleidoscope of sights sounds smells (good and bad!) an all sensory trip that all photographers should experience!
Bxrgirl27 said at 9:13 a.m. on Oct 16, 2008:
I've never been to New York so it's always a treat to experience the sights and streets via others here on Tabblo. You captured so much color amongst such grey streetscape - a little bit of red in nearly every photo. Thanks for the tour. :-)

Eduardo.affonso said at 12:47 p.m. on Oct 16, 2008:
Who cares about "perfection" when there's so much life involved? Life isn't perfect, is it? And Chinatown is what it is because of all that chaos, that you captured with your "nervous" cam. Good job, PAM.
YorkJodi said at 1:02 p.m. on Oct 16, 2008:

congrats on TOD, love the market, so much fresh food and fish. actually Clydo, the sign says please beware of thief. the small words underneath describe him "as approx. 6 foot, African American, wears a hat or head scarf, and often pretends to be on the phone."

these are wonderful, Pammie. i love how you always jolt me back to reality, to light and life. even the quote sends that message. i sometimes find myself so engrossed in taking good pictures of places and events that i forget to experience them as well. =) that photo of the old woman sitting on the steps, by the door speaks heaps to me. i love it! congratulations on TOD! =)
Ebucar said at 10:26 p.m. on Oct 16, 2008:

For a while, I thought this were Charles's. Haha! :) I love the bustling atmosphere of the city shots. These are wonderful, Pam. Congrats on TOD! :)
Pkeener said at 11:17 p.m. on Oct 16, 2008:
Well, i am just floored by all the great comments here, and i waited to long to answer each of you. I love being in the thick of things! taking these photos was such a great experince.

Sue, thank you for the translation! How fun to have all of your collective ideas on what the signs said, how the photos affected you, and your genuine interest in my tabblo. As I browsed the shops and stands for souvenirs, I kept asking the merchants what the symbolism behind all the trinkets were. ( i didnt photoraph any of those) and They all said" "good Luck" and then I would say how much? and they would say "five Dollah". Cracked me up, but i think the good luck rubbed off!
Janer said at 12:32 a.m. on Oct 17, 2008:
Its easy to be disoriented to think that this is still in NY. I thought before I was in Mongkok area in Hongkong! I love how you captured the China-ness is all the shots Pam :)
Pkeener said at 12:34 a.m. on Oct 17, 2008:
Tony, did my message help? I don't crop a lot, but when i do i use the 'constrain' tool, and it seems to fill the templates perfectly. Where's LatentE when you need him??
Clydo said at 12:34 a.m. on Oct 17, 2008:
Thanks Sue, I stand corrected. Your translation makes so much more sense than what my colleague told me.... "dressed as a woman and steals phones" haha! although that translation makes it so much more exciting. :)
Pkeener said at 12:42 a.m. on Oct 17, 2008:
E, i thought it could be true! stealing the phones to resell along with the "Rolexes" and "Coach" handbags!!
Jane, now that is a very nice complement!
Snooway said at 2:18 a.m. on Oct 17, 2008:
Haha, yes, a cross-dressing thief who sells phones is much more interesting:)
Wildthing said at 7:30 a.m. on Oct 17, 2008:
Pleased to see that you got TOD.
Pkeener said at 8:04 a.m. on Oct 17, 2008:

Mr. McCain and pills, I don't like pills ..... ;-) ---------- Pk. I like your open and interested view! May next time, you can take more closer portraits.......
Pkeener said at 8:26 a.m. on Oct 17, 2008:
thank you Weimar! Great suggestion! I have a rather short lens, and I would love to move closer to capture the portraits. it was too chaotic in Chinatown for me to concentrate!
WEIMAR said at 8:37 a.m. on Oct 17, 2008:
I understand this, my experience is, It's not easy to take portraits and mostly you need a long time with 'models' you will take ;-)

Pam, this is a superb photo-documentary on the sights, sounds and smells of Chinatown! I can almost hear the lively Cantonese conversations and the sometimes jarring honks from the impatient drivers... an awesome TOD! congratulations! =)
Pkeener said at 1:26 p.m. on Oct 17, 2008:
Woody! yes, the Ubiquitous honk. i can still hear them. =) how's that for our word o the day?
Thank you Teo!
Kelly, I take that to heart. thank you. I saw her from across the street and that was the best I could get, but what a face!

Pam, what a great tabblo, and how you 've touched something in so many people. I like the way your layout with the photos tight up against one another conveys the crowdedness of Chinatown. The bustle, the noise, the smells -- all there!
Krisu said at 7:57 a.m. on Oct 20, 2008:
What a tabblo! Sorry I missed the TOD-day but congrats anyway. I'v been to NY many many years ago....
