Fall Foliage Tour on the Harley

Life starts all over again

when it gets crisp in the fall.

Despite my stuffy nose and cough, UB and I couldn't let another beautiful October weekend pass without taking in the fall color changes from the Harley. We suited up in layers of fleece and leather—and a heated vest for me—and headed out for a few hours of fresh air and foliage.

In the picture below, just to the left of my right shoulder is part of the reservoir and an island. The faint gray rise behind that mountain is Mount Manadnock, which we climbed a few weeks prior.

Thank goodness for the heated vest! Me at the top of Quabbin Tower,

Here is our approximate route around the Wachusett and Quabbin reservoirs. The Wikipedia listing for the Wachusett Reservoir contains a picture of the Old Stone Church in West Boylston, one of my all-time favorite spots, especially in autumn. Here's some additional history from the town's website.

Under Quabbin is a fabulous documentary from WGBH Boston (PBS) about the creation of the reservoir. More information can be found at the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. More information here: Friends of Quabbin

Here are a few of the better stitched-together panoramas. Most of the individual original photos follow below.

Starting (at left) with the northwest corner of the tower and ending (at right) with the southeast corner.

Northwest (at left ) to northeast (at right).

Another northwest (at left ) to northeast (at right).

Southwest (at left) to northwest (at right).

Northeast (at left) to southeast (at right).

Me and UB at the top of the tower in all our gear.

Mount Manadnock in New Hampshire is the gray rise above the very red birch and the island.

Joe:

Thanks for taking a look.

The scratches are on the windows themselves, not the camera's lens. From what I could tell, people had used their keys to scratch the windows in the tower. It's unfortunate that other visitors to the Quabbin Reservoir lack the respect the location deserves.

The reflections are caused by a sunny autumn day, and I'm about to complain about that because we only get so many of those in New England. At least it wasn't raining.
