Since I was a child, Studebakers have always amazed me. My uncle, a veteran of the Army Air Corps, bought one of the postwar models with a grill that looked like a jet intake. My father took me to the New York Auto Show where the Avanti was introduced, and I thought it looked like an Italian airplane. But the penultimate dream Studebaker was the Golden Hawk. The body style was fin heaven and a grill suggesting Mercedes. The supercharged engine was pure muscle. Thanks, designer Raymond Lowey, for your dreams on wheels. |
