South Africa: Vulture Restaurant

Vultures like to sit down to a good meal, but unlike other animals they are quite specific about what’s on the menu. These rather ugly birds only eat the meat of dead animals, so they can be tricky dinner guests.

De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Trust defines a vulture restaurant "as a specific site where animal carcasses, both wild animals of any shape or size are provided as an artificial source for vultures to provide a feeding haven for vultures where uncontaminated and safe food is supplied on a regular basis"

This restaurant we found in Golden Gate National Park, in Drakensberg area in South Africa.

It was a bit scary to be surrounded by more than 50 vultures just after/ before they had been feeding of some dead animals.  When circling in the air a group of vultures is called a kettle.

A Cape Vulture average length is about 1 m with a wingspan of about 2.4 m and a body weight of 9.4 kg.

I had never heard of "vulture restaurants" before. You shouldn't fear such lovely birds - unless you are dead. Well, then you have nothing to fear anymore...

They love to catch the wind currents and float in the sky.. We have black and red vultures in Florida. Every October, at sunset, the migrating vultures swirl in the skys over my house and roost in the trees throughout the neighborhood.

I too never heard of a vulture restaurant. Interesting. I also didn't know about the term "Kettle." Good photos.

Great shots. Vultures are such ugly looking birds on the ground but as soon as they take to the skies they are so beautiful to watch.
