In their own ways both of these are derived from Edward Weston's original. At least his most famous pepper photo. I was originally charged with interpreting a photo that inspires me.
Then the idea was to go back to the source photo and do the opposite. In some ways both of these fit both ideas.
As many of my own stories go, there is a longer one about "Weston Eurika!" than most people care to hear about. The one thing I can say about it is that it all came together in an instant. Then it was gone. But that's the way it is in photography.
