Accidental Abstracts

While  in Virginia visting my friend, I accompanied her to her painting class at the Visual Arts Center  of Richmond.

While she painted, I wandered around and saw some wooden work tables where a multitude of  artists had tested their strokes or simply splattered their paints.

Over time they beacame "accidental" works of art in themselves.

The first image is an aspect of canvas I found on the floor in a corner.

Sometimes things just catch your eye...

No great artist ever sees things as they really are.  If he did, he would cease to be an artist.  ~Oscar Wilde

Hey Deb! You are so right! I paint on one of those tables, and they are such a great study in of themselves. Great eye and mind to think of this!
Pkeener said at 10:52 p.m. on Dec 3, 2008:
Oscar Wilde also said this, which i post on my Blog: A work of art is the unique result of a unique temperament

Don't you just love him?

Debbie, these are great. I have no eye for modern art but these seem to me to be more pleasing to the eye than most of what goes as art in itself!
DocEna said at 4:57 a.m. on Dec 4, 2008:
Nice Debbie...keen eye and sensitivity to art in accident as you say...fascinating color palette

Hi Debra, I do enjoy your close up studies of "manmade" objects as they show a style here on Tabblo that is less frequented in my opinion. I have enjoyed your play with light and it's natural quality. In my youthful days I did exactly the same in my small 8x8 studio. I particularly like your presentations in "Got Milk" & "Two Shot Study" and when I am ready I will re-visit them again and be better armed with my references. This presentation is a celebration of Colo(u)r and where we as humans have come from in the world of painting. We have been stimulated by art and all sorts of subliminal messages have been locked into our mind about what looks good and so forth. I agree with Chilla in many respects about modern art and although I work in it's midst I have only once in thirty years of employment bought anything significant from these young artists. My first thoughts of any image is that it must catch my eye and long enough to draw me in closer to it. As thumbnails these images should hold the essence of this magnetism and that is why I will finalize my presentation from a thumbnail perspective. This presentation works from both a thumbnail presentation as well as individual elements that make up the whole. A rich Tabblo(et) of color. Mike.

Debdog said at 11:10 a.m. on Dec 4, 2008:
thanks ! YES Mirella, I am not a big fan of modern art, and I have seen some paintings in famous places , by "famous artists" and they did NOTHING for me and looked to me like paint spills....haha! :) but these few havea little something to catch my eye, even if it's not my favorite style ;)
