Discovery: 2nd & 3rd Quarter 2008

April 2008 was the springtime for my photography. It was the month when I first hung out with a group of talented and enthusiastic photographers (Joaqy, Mariusblack, etc.); and it was also the month when I joined tabblo.com. This website changed a lot of perspectives I had with photography. Given a photography opportunity, some photographers aim to capture the best photographs he can shoot; a lot will actually interpret the event as a possible monetary-inducing chance and, therefore, will shoot great pictures with profit as the goal in mind; but in my case, and it is true to a lot of the members of tabblo.com, I shoot pictures in order to convey not just the beauty of the subject but some meaning which seems to be deeply imbedded on the subjects. That's why tabblos are not merely online photo albums but they are beyond pictures--a good combination of pictures with a layout that resonates the theme and/or title, and if possible, some accompanying words create a different kind of experience for the viewing person. A picture is not just a picture--but a part of a larger reality. Being a literature major and a film buff, I am a sucker for stories--tabblos appeal to me in this way. The photographs transcend beyond just being  frozen or captured moments--all the photos, they flow together and form a life of their own.

In my previous tabblo, Recovery, I expressed how extremely revived I was after being able to get another shot in photography. In the second quarter of 2008, a lingering feeling of resurrection seemed to pervade my senses while absorbing the thrill of improving the craft. I look back at this period and realize that I had made a lot of discoveries during this time. The seemingly ordinary began to speak to me. The beautiful seem to speak beyond its essence. And more importantly, it seems that I have become a part of the process of interpreting the meaning of the photographs. I realized that I became not only an architect but a prophet of visions, both meaningful and real.

I had a lot of chances to take pictures this year. I was able to visit two of the most beautiful places in the Philippines: Siquijor and Bohol. Many of my best photos this year are from those places. The pictures in this tabblo are but a few of the photos I took and cherished from April to September. I decided to put all of these together because I'm saving another special tabblo as the year 2008 ends. The next tabblo, my year-ender tabblo, will feature my top ten photos for 2008. They're not just the best of the bunch for me, but the most meaningful also. It's also cool to realize that that will be my 200th tabblo already. :) I also decided to skip making a 4th quarter collection because that will mean reposting my most recent tabblos--mostly the Singapore shots. That will be too redundant already since I just made the last Singapore tabblo a few weeks ago.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I do. Thanks to everyone who continue to inspire me with encouraging warm words of appreciation and great pieces of advice. In spirit, you are all part of these photographs. :) - James aka SirNicolay

A nice reminder of the excellent work you have posted, James. Hey, I always thought that POV stood for 'Point of View', not..........Prophet of Visions :)))))

Most memorable images during these times are the apple & Siquijor images. :)

Hi James, I really enjoyed your text and it helps me to get to know you more this way, me being a late comer to Tabblo. I fully agree with your comments about Tabblo and it's formula/structure, having spent much time searching for this form of gallery/story telling forum. It has it's quirkiness, but in time it will stabilize. This collection of images is for me the best. It has a wonderfull layout whose contents are so perfectly balanced with the use of closeups, action, flora & fauna. Bright richly coloured scenery against a dark neutral background is always a winner. You POVs especially the waterfall and backpacker scene and recently little India (over the shoulder shot) show your skills at their best within the Photo Journalism context. The final shot as Rhonda said, is the best for me and the cinemascope 16:9 crop gives it such epic strength. Captured at the hight of excitement with all the chilren contributing to the effect at once. I can live with this slight excess of contrast as we spoke earlier about, as it is the tropics and one has to were Polaroids there anyway LOL. I could always review your work on a Mac at work if need be. Thank you James and I appreciate your hard work in creating these Tabblos and look forward to 2009 and what it has for all of us. Mike.

Thank you, Thierry, Rhonda, Pachito, Stadtron, Mike, Joaquin, Den, Mike, Farid, and David.

Mike (Wildthing), you made me laugh there. Haha! Prophet of Visions really sounds strangely cool, eh? I think a "visionary prophet" sounds a bit redundant, so I made it POV instead haha. :)

Joaquin, yeah, you liked the Siquijor shots a lot; the two shots which you like (sea breeze and solitary mangrove tree) will be part of my top ten. Haha. But it surprises me that I have 3 pictures from my Bohol trip which made it to my top ten. :) I guess because it's a matter of maturity photography-wise. It's so hard to pick just ten pictures. It took me a whole afternoon to decide on what will make the list.

Mike (L810th), I agree with the quirks we experience in this site, but there are a lot of things to be thankful for than to complain. :) I feel happy with your comment about Photo Journalism context because that's the kind of direction I want to go into. In fact, that kind of job might be the only one that can get me out of the teaching profession. But we'll see. I have yet to post another tabblo for tomorrow--my top ten for 2008. It will be a celebration of my development as a photographer this year... especially because starting January, I'll be studying Photoshop CS4, and hopefully, I might reap more benefits by tinkering with that software. Thanks for the comments once again. :)

James you not only take wonderful pictures but you also have a great way with words. I can only concur with all you say about the tabblo community. Thank you!

like a well crafted novel, these photos are a delight to "read" over and over again. Every picture tells a story, and yours really speak to me. I often interpret them with out your words, and then i go back to read what you have said. I am never surprised to see that we agree in many ways, and delighted when I am completely off base! First and last shots are KILLER. Naturally.
