Otsu: A fortified village in Yayoi Japan (300 B.C. - 300 A.D.)
 
Otsu village was built on a hilltop (in modern-day Yokohama)
 
The village was heavily fortified by ditches and fences
 
Storehouses were the key to the growth and prosperity of the village
 
Inside the residence
 
The size of this building indicates an important man lived here

Left and right: Ratguards were made to keep out field mice from running up the stilt-legs of the storehouse. 

 
A single wooden coffin went into the middle of the burial mound
 
Carbonized rice remains from Otsu village

Rectangular graves were lined around a square mound (see aerial view of excavated site in the picture on the right). The pottery in the picture on the left were found in the ditches of the Otsu village.
