The exposure time on this picture of Bucharest's Arch of Triumph was mistakenly set way too long, and this was the unintended result. I snapped the shot, held the camera as still as I could for a couple seconds, and then realized there was no way I'd be able to keep it in focus, so I brought the camera back down to my lap in the van. This picture was a very happy accident. |

We kicked off our recent research trip to Romania in Bucharest on the night of December 9, 2008. Aside from the picture above and the first one below, all of the shots here were taken the next day before we hit the road to the smaller cities and towns across the country. Even though our time in Bucharest was so brief, we managed to soak in a lot. I enjoyed it quite a bit. |

Flying into Bucharest |

This was a building just outside our hotel in Revolution Square the next morning... |

...if you look closely, you can see bullet holes in the wall from the 1989 revolution that began here. |

This is the view if you turned directly to your right from the previous two shots. |

One of the first things we noticed was all the wires put up before they started regulating who could hang new ones. |

The other end of the building pictured above. |

This picture actually sums up a lot of Bucharest. Wires, satellite dishes, air conditioning units, advertisements, and traffic. |

There was a good deal of renovation and construction going on too, which was good to see. |

This whole area was undergoing a serious beautification process. |
And as the clock here shows, it was around 10am when we arrived at the brewery there on the right by the tree with Christmas lights on it. What better time for a beer than 10am? |

Inside the brewery. Me in the foreground, Luc in the background. |

Part of the window in there... |

This temple was just down the street from the brewery. |
This is either more construction, or a crazy, tree-like iron support for the brick wall. It looks like a support to me |

And then some other interesting buildings around town. The homemade scaffolding here was incredible. |

You saw this a lot. Entire sides of huge buildings covered with giant advertisements. I felt bad for whoever lived behind them... |

An incredibly dangerous looking balcony |

Inside a church we came across. |

And another dangerous balcony |

A sculpture of Dracula |

The second largest building in the world. It's indescribably massive. This picture was obviously taken from a pretty good distance, and even with my wide angle lens, I couldn't fit the whole thing in a single shot. It's currently the Romanian Parliament building. |

One of the surrounding government buildings as seen in the warped reflection on our van's window. |

And finally, me in the reflection as well. |
