Râşnov Fortress, Romania - December 11, 2008

The view as you arrive and head for the main entrance. This is only a small part of the overall fortress.

We left Brasov in the morning and headed over to this impressive fortress in Rasnov. It was built around 1215, and was effective enough that it wasn't breached until almost 1600. Wandering around inside, surrounded by the huge Carpathian Mountains in the cold, winter weather really started to give us a small inkling of what life might have been like there centuries ago.

The view of the whole fortress from the town below. And once again, you can see that "Hollywood"-style sign telling us where we are.

Turning to the right from where the first shot was taken.

A cool exterior wall

Taken from right up at the main entrance.

Some of the surrounding mountain range.

This one gets across their massive scale. Just look at the pine trees in the foreground, then the middle-ground, then climbing halfway up on the mountain and finally stopping.

Once inside, you can immediately see that it's a whole little city. This is just a small portion of the buildings around the central area.

This is a little further in. I love the spiked gates.

And this dog was our guide at the fortress. He walked up to us as we arrived and were getting out of our van, and stayed with us pretty much the entire time we were there. He was a very sweet dog. And just through this gate is where the netxt grouping of shots was taken.

This hill is actually still inside the fortress.

A thick layer of fog was really blanketing this one area of forest just down the hill from us. Such a great, eerie mood.

The little wagon up on top of the hill makes this shot for me.

That's our guide, Chris. I think he believed he was staying out of my shot by getting up against the wall, but to me it made him look like he was posing for an album cover or something.

Again, still inside the fortress.

Getting up towards the top of the hill, there were less actual structures and more stone ruins.

There's Jill getting some video.

From left to right, our Producer Michelle, our Production Designer Luc, our Director Jill, and me.

Another view from the top of the hill.

Hanging from a post in the bottom left of frame, you can see an old cage used for torture purposes back in the day. It was pretty small. You'd have to be tucked into a little ball to fit inside, and I'm not sure someone my height would even be able to do that.

Heading back down.

One of the open rooms.

This skeleton was unearthed years ago, and left exactly where it was found. This shot was taken through a little window they actually built into the floor so you could view it.

And finally, returning to the van parked there on the bottom left of frame.

I am surprised how few comments you have received for this great story of an amazing location. If I ever head to Romania, I will certainly visit this fortress. I love the winding street scenery with wall lights and archways. The curved uprights of wall and hallway lookout windows. This is a unique location with amazing scenery of which photo#25 encapsulates. I would have chosen that view with slight cropping to introduce this Tabblo. Thank you for sharing this with me. Mike.

Some others were showing up as we were leaving, but while we were wandering, it was just us. That made it so great, having it to ourselves.

And thank you everyone else for the kind words.
