The one thing that's missing from this shot that we usually saw in among the herds of sheep was a donkey or two. Not sure exactly why, but they were almost always there. |

Throughout this Romania trip, we probably spent almost as much time on the road as we did in any city we visited. And while on the road, we took a lot of what came to be known as "ah s#!t" shots - as in we'd be tooling along in the van, you'd hear someone's camera snap a picture through the window, and then hear them say "ah s#!t!" when they realized they took the picture right as we hit a big pothole, or as a sign got in the way, or a big reflection from the window messed it up. But when all was said and done, some of these pictures actually did turn out to be decent, and in many cases showed another side of the country that we didn't really capture anywhere else. So here are my best "ah s#!t" shots. |

A distant shot of the second largest building in the world as we were fighting traffic to leave Bucharest and head for Bran Castle and Brasov. |

And a short time later as we entered the Carpathian Mountains, we were seeing the contrast of these little mountain villages compared to the big city we had just left. Originally being a small town person myself, I actually felt a little more comfortable in these areas than I was in Bucharest. |

I liked the sleeping dog in this one. |

The forests in Romania had a bit of a unique look that I was never quite able to capture, but as you'll see, I kept trying. |

We stopped off the side of the road at one point to see a view of some of the mountains we were going through. |

The little houses in the foreground and big building on the mountain waaaay in the background give some good scale. |

Looking off to the right of that last shot. I keep staring at the shadows of the trees in the foreground. |

We also pulled over in a very small town for like 5 minutes to get a few shots. |

A couple close-ups of the tower to the left... |

That crack all the way down the middle made this building seem a little dangerous. |

And as always, there were the ruins of an old fortress overlooking the town. |

And some gypsies hitch-hiking with their babies. |

This was one of the closer attempts at catching the typical, Romanian forest. They were populated with very tall, narrow trees that created an almost graphic look. |

The side of a big building covered with windows that weren't in such good shape. It looked pretty out of place as we passed through the Carpathians. |

I just thought I might as well get a shot of a cop and his cop car. |

Looking back at Brasov through the trees as they zoom past. |

Pine trees in the Carpathians. |

This gives a taste of what made these "ah s#!t" shots. You can see where I caught the edge of the window at the top of frame. |

An extremely typical view on our drives. Colorful old houses in various stages of repair and disrepair. |

Our first glimpse of Rasnov fortress, which we visited the next day. It got it's own tabblo that you can find in among my other Romania tabblos. |

I really like the feeling of motion in this shot. |

The shots from here on all turned out looking filtered because of the tinted windows in the van. I like the effect. |

This hill's angular shape stood out to us all as we drove by. |

That tree in the middle of frame had an interesting, gnarled look. |

Another typical view. |

Definitely one of my favorite of the "ah s#!t" shots. |
And that, finally, is the last of my Romania tabblos. Our trip took us from Bucharest, to Bran, to Brasov, Rasnov, Sigi Swara, Biertan, and finally Sibiu. All of them were fantastic, and I wish we could have spent more time in each, but what a great opportunity just to explore such a unique country. And if you haven't already, please feel free to check out all the rest of them here.
Enjoy! |
