The Iceman Leaveth Soon

Once upon a time two weeks ago, there was a whole lot of snow. What can a kid like me possibly do with so much of the white stuff? I thought about it for a looooong time--almost one minute!--and realized: I've never made a snowman.

So I enlisted my Daddy to do some of the heavy lifting, sculpting, finger freezing and all-the-working. What follows is not reality, it's actuality.

Too cool for school.

1. Sprinkle snow into a bucket. This ensures that snow will be in a bucket.

2. Oh ok! You dump the snow that was in the bucket to form the base of the snowman.

3. Check the stability of the base by sitting on it. If it falls apart on you, then it's back to the bucket.

4. Try to secure cute fans. It's inspiring to create before an adoring, and adorable, audience.

5. However, make sure your cheering section is assembled at a safe distance. You don't want casualties in case an impromptu snowball fight breaks out.

6. Magically, a form will appear. For some reason, this one looks like Mrs. Buttersworth.

7. Carefully sculpt the face to make room for eyes, nose, mouth.

8. Add said eyes.

9. Add said nose. Do not be alarmed that it looks like Homer Simpson!

10. Add said mouth...and cleaver?? Again, not to worry, there is a master plan here!

11. Conduct quality inspection.

12. Ta-da! The snowman, er, snowlady is complete!

This snowman was brought to you with limited interruption by these people in blue.

See you next winter!

Love it! Such a coordinated family - all in blue. But mom really needs to get in the pics too - we have got to train someone else to take good photos! Believe me, I know the feeling ; )

So enlightening! Never seen such a snow lady. Cool! German kids simply form a little snowbal and then roll it through the snow till you have a big big ball. Three balls are formed this way and put onto another and clistered with snow. Then two small snowballs are formed and added as arms. The old tradition is to use two coals as eyes and tree for the waist coat buttons and a carrot as nose. Then it gets a broomstick into one hand and pot on the top serves as a hat. If you don't have these items ready, folk simply uses sticks and stones. ....But I see...times are changing ;-) ... We haven't had enough snow for snowman for years. Who knows, what the kids would produce now.

Thanks for your comments everyone! One day, maybe, I'll make it into the pictures.

Anke--believe me! We tried the rolling a snowball strategy but just couldn't get it to work! Plus we were out of real vegetables and were too lazy to look for twigs, so we raided my daughter's toy kitchen and made do with what she had :) It was definitely a fun time, but boy are we ready for spring.
