I play volleyball most weekends with some friends of mine. It's pretty great to have an excuse to get out to the beach that often, and having grown up in Massachusetts, I appreciate being able to do it at all in the winter. We play at the same net each week, just a few blocks north of the peer in Manhattan Beach, and I wanted to try to get some good shots to show how it's come to look to us over the years. That's the peer in the background. |

There's Steve warming up, about to hammer that ball right OVER the net and on down the beach a ways. Then he'll have to walk all the way down there in the sand to get it. I do it all the time too, and it sucks. |

And Jim, my teammate for most of the day, waiting patiently for our turn to play the winners. |

I always love getting the first game started. And man, it knocks the wind out of you - but after that first exhausting one, we always kind of level out and feel okay to play for a few hours. |

Todd serving. |

Patrick heading back to serve. |

Steve up for a hit. |

Jeremy and Steve playing together, with Steve picking up the ball to go serve and Jeremy getting in position to block. |

And there's Todd and Patrick on the other side. Great spike by Jeremy, but Todd was blocking everything that day. |

Patrick bringing the ball back to serve, probably after Todd blocking something. Jeremy looks bummed, probably after being blocked by Todd. |

This was the framing I wanted, but not the focus. Apparently, the auto-focus found the background to be more interesting than the foreground as I was snapping the shot. It just made me laugh when I saw how it came out. |

That's Steve's hand. And the name of that volleyball is either "The Body" (Steve's), or "Whiter Pepper" (mine). |

Switching sides every 5 points. These shots all get across a little of what it's like to watch a game, but I wish I could get across some of what it's like to be playing. That's the best part. |
