'Lost'

An insidious and wicked malady:  Alzheimer's Disease destroys the mind, and in so doing steals the names, dates, places, and all recognition of that which is held dear to us.  It robs us of our  individuality.

The scrapbook of a full life fades into the mists of non-recognition.

Good singer Keith Urban. It is a sad reality that hits most of us. We need to start doing something about it by keeping our brain active in reading, puzzles, other games, etc. I am doing my best not to let it get me. If it starts, it will have one heck of a fight on its hands.

An increasing problem and one that we must develop a greater understanding about. We are all uncomfortable with difficult images and ideas but Mike you meet them head on and Good for you!

I AGREE, ALZHEIMER'S IS A CRUEL DISEASE THAT ROBS US OF OUR DIGNITY. I AM DEALING WITH IT WITH MY MOM THAT I BROUGHT UP FROM CALIFORNIA THIS PAST SUMMER. IT IS VERY HARD TO WATCH THEM GO DOWNHILL. ITS GOING TO BE A LONG HARD ROAD FOR HER AND FOR ME. I AGREE WITH RHONDA, WE NEED TO FIND A CURE. RHONDA
Wildthing said at 3:59 p.m. on Feb 5, 2009:
Sorry to hear about your Mom, Rhonda. I remember the day that my Mom looked at me as if I was a stranger. I asked her if she knew who I was, and she replied, 'No, not really. Who are you?' That is a moment I will never forget. Tragic that medical science has not done more over the decades. This disease was first recognized in 1906. Over the years it has been semi-ignored, and funding for development of drugs like Viagra and other less crucial, more lucrative research has taken priority. Maybe it's an ageist thing.

Your little poem hits home with me lately... and I don't even have Alzheimer's... at least I don't think so... teehee... It is a terrible disease and so sad to see or know someone who has it... I've known too many. Good job, Mike

Lovely song .... Maybe there isnt a cure .... We have to learn how to deal with the ALZHEIMERS and take great care of our Mothers and Fathers , who have fallen ill .... Doreen sad it have to keep the brain moving..
L810th said at 7:19 p.m. on Feb 5, 2009:
Powerful message in your photo Mike, even without the words. I had to look into this story to confirm my first impressions. This "disease" is most cruel for the carer especially when they are the only member of the family left to cope with it. Mike.
Hollyridger said at 8:11 p.m. on Feb 5, 2009:
Mike I so admire you for facing this horrible disease head-on. My Mum too, did not know who I was towards the end - what a horrible experience that was, especially when you live on different continents. I read everything I can about this knowing that there is every chance I will become like this, too. Keeping the brain active seems to be the most important thing as Doreen has already said. I reckon that figuring out how the computer works and being able to post a tabblo despite all the quirks counts for quite a lot!!!

It is really terrible illness. I about it heard. Sad impression.
Jigs said at 10:31 p.m. on Feb 5, 2009:
Yes, it is an extremely frightening illness. Slowly losing yourself, who you are - it's scary and excruciating torture. I hope and pray a cure will soon be found. Your tabblo photo is powerful and heartrending, but in a subtle way. And thank you for the Urban link.
Leftofcenter said at 11:13 p.m. on Feb 5, 2009:
another heartwrenching illness. beautiful poignant photo. b&w very moving.

Impacting photo that speaks so much. It was hard to see my grandmother not know who I was anymore, but at the last moment before she died, she remembered me and helped me understand that Alzheimer's is like a temporary blindfold of the mind. The soul leaves with the memories.

One way to counter Alzheimer's is to stay on Tabblo....except I keep forgetting to...
Appropos said at 3:29 a.m. on Feb 6, 2009:
it is a sad thing to see..
Hhwind said at 3:56 a.m. on Feb 6, 2009:
That a very strong reminder that we need our mind to be intact as we grow older, guess that a sad thing about growing old. We always take care of our physical body but neglect the mind, its time to take our minds to a mind gymn, like tabblo it helps, thanks Mike.

Wildthing said at 4:01 a.m. on Feb 6, 2009:
This disease attacks some of the most creative people in the world; writers, artists, scientists. I don't believe you can ward it off by keeping your mind busy. Maybe the reports I've read that say drinking plenty of coffee helps prevent its onset are true. I hope so, because I drink far too much of the stuff.

This is a very deep and meaningful picture, it sadly reflects a lot of lives, excellent work,
Mariusblack said at 5:32 a.m. on Feb 6, 2009:
this tabblo surely hits the spot, mike. if we are the sum of our memories, choices and beliefs, i cannot even begin to fathom the misery of someone who has the disease. thank you very much for sharing the image and a part of your life.
Sirnicolay said at 9:32 a.m. on Feb 6, 2009:
Horrible disease. I remember crying over a local movie where the mom is suffering from the A. disease. it was too painful to watch her not recognizing the people closest to her. It makes me want to wish that I hope the same thing won't happen to my mom. That will be too devastating. :(
Swedfinn said at 1:13 p.m. on Feb 6, 2009:
A deep tragedy not just to him but to all his friends and relatives as well. Who is suffering most?

A dehumanizing disease. I saw what it did with my father in the last year of his life. I was the only one he recognized, he didn't know who his grandchildren were or my wife. I like the capture, going from the light to eternal darkness.
