Last December was the Caterpillar Month for the children.  We found a lot of green caterpillars on some of the oleander trees in front of our house.  They were voracious eaters, decimating the leaves and stems of the trees.  Usually, the gardener would pick them up and throw them away.  One day the kids wondered what these creatures would turn into, thus began our pet caterpillar project.

We bought a few plastic hamster boxes to keep the caterpillars and brought them the oleander leaves.  The caterpillars were the most efficient machines in turning leaves into their black excrement pellets.  The kids had a lot of fun watching them nibbling the leaves and moving around to new leaves.   Titus and Tatia brought a few to give to friends and classes at school.  Tanya liked to hold the boxes and carried them around all day, hitting various things as she went.  Aor felt bad for the caterpillars and tried to hide the boxes from Tanya sometime.

At first, nobody dared touching the caterpillars directly, only through paper or plastic sheets.  After we had 3, Titus made a breakthrough in holding them up and told everyone that the caterpillars were soft.  Tatia saw Titus' bravery and started holding them too.  Tanya followed suit.  After little children's examples,  Aor and Ko mustered up courage at last to hold them.  Everyone felt fine touching and holding them in the end.

After a few days, the caterpillars turned from green to brown, ate less leaves, moved more slowly, and started gluing leaves to be their roof or nest.  After that they turned their outer shells into dark brown and stopped moving, finally became chrysalises.  Tatia would ask for more moving caterpillars and Aor would get more.  After a few days, the cycle would repeat.  We bought more boxes to separate the chrysalises and the caterpillars.  At the peak, we had 10 chrysalises at the same time.

The chrysalises lasted about two weeks and turned into moths.  We looked up their pictures and found that they were called Oleander Hawk Moth.  The camouflage patterns looked quite pretty.  The kids got excited when things started moving again.  There was some white liquid on their wings and they would wait or flutter their wings to dry them before flying.  We released them at night into the wild after the birds went to sleep.

ช่วงเดือนธันวาที่ผ่านมากิจกรรมยอดฮิตของเด็กๆ คือ การเลี้ยงหนอนผีเสื้อ คงเป็นเพราะว่าเราเจอเจ้าหนอนตัวอ้วน สีเขียวๆ บนต้นยี่โถหน้าบ้านเราบ่อยมาก มันจะกัดกินใบจนยอดด้วน ถ้าโชคร้ายหน่อยก็จะโดนคนสวนเก็บทิ้งไป แล้วพวกเราก็สงสัยกันว่ามันโตขึ้นเป็นผีเสื้อแล้วหน้าตามันจะเป็นยังไงนะ แล้วเราก็เริ่มเก็บเจ้าหนอนมาเลี้ยงกัน

เราไปซื้อกล่องใสๆที่ใช้เลี้ยงหนูแฮมสเตอร์มาเป็นบ้านของเจ้าหนอน แล้วก็คอยตัดยอดต้นยี่โถหน้าบ้านมาเป็นอาหาร เจ้าหนอนกินเก่งมาก กินทั้งวันทั้งคืน แล้วก็อึออกมาเป็นก้อนสีดำกลมๆ เด็กๆเพลิดเพลินกับการสังเกตชีวิตของเจ้าหนอนน้อยมาก คอยดูมันกัดแทะใบไม้ทีละนิดๆ พอหมดใบนี้มันก็จะยืดตัวทำคอยาวๆข้ามไปหาใบใหม่ ธีธัชกับธีญาได้เอาหนอนไปแบ่งปันให้เพื่อนๆที่โรงเรียนได้เรียนรู้อย่างสนุกสนาน ส่วนธัญญาก็ขอถือกล่องหนอนทั้งวัน แล้วเธอก็ถือเดินชนโน่นนี่บ้าง วางแรงๆบ้าง สงสารเจ้าหนอนเหลือเกิน เลยต้องคอยเอาแอบไม่ให้เห็น

ช่วงแรกๆทุกคนก็กลัวเจ้าหนอน ไม่มีใครกล้าแตะ เลี้ยงไปซัก 3 ตัว ธีธัชก็เป็นผู้แสดงความกล้าคนแรก เอามือไปลูบๆ แล้วบอกกับทุกคนว่า นิ่มจัง ธีญาก็เริ่มหายกลัว กล้าเอามือไปแตะ พอเจ้าธัญญาเห็นพี่แตะได้ก็เลยเอามั่ง แม่อ้อกับพ่อโก้กลัวคำครหาว่าใจแป๊ะ ก็เลยต้องเอามือไปลูบๆบ้าง สุดท้ายหายกลัวกันหมด

เลี้ยงไปได้ไม่ถึงอาทิตย์ดี เจ้าหนอนสีเขียวก็กลายเป็นเจ้าหนอนสีน้ำตาลเข้ม ช่วงนี้มันจะกินใบไม้อยู่บ้าง แต่น้อยลง มันจะเริ่มเคลื่อนไหวช้าลง แล้วก็เริ่มดึงใบไม้มาปิดตัวโดยจะสร้างใยมาเป็นกาวทำให้ใบไม้ติดกัน ช่วงนี้มันก็จะไม่กินอาหารล่ะค่ะ เปลือกด้านนอกก็จะกลายเป็นเปลือกแข็งสีน้ำตาลแล้วก็เข้าสู่ช่วง ดักแด้ ช่วงนี้ล่ะค่ะที่ธัชธีญาจะไม่ชอบเพราะมันไม่ขยับตัวแล้ว เธอก็จะขอร้องให้ไปเก็บเจ้าหนอนมาเลี้ยงอีก แม่อ้อก็จะออกไปเก็บหนอนมาเลี้ยงอีก เป็นอย่างนี้อยู่ซัก 5 รอบได้มั้งคะ สุดท้ายเราก็เลยต้องซื้อกล่องหนอนเพิ่มอีก กล่องหนึ่งเลี้ยงเจ้าหนอน อีกกล่องเลี้ยงดักแด้ เราเคยมีดักแด้ในกล่องสูงสุด 10 ตัวเลยล่ะ

มันจะเป็นดักแด้นานประมาณ 2 อาทิตย์แล้วก็ค่อยแหวกเปลือกออกมาเป็น ผีเสื้อกลางคืนลายทหาร (Oleander Hawk Moth) ลายสวยมาก เด็กๆตื่นเต้นกันใหญ่ ตอนมันออกมาจะมีน้ำสีขาวขุ่นติดออกมาด้วย ไม่แน่ใจนักว่าคืออะไร แต่เจ้าผีเสื้อจะยังบินไม่ได้ มันต้องรอให้ปีกแห้งก่อน บางทีมันก็กระพือปีกพั่บๆทำให้ปีกแห้งเร็วขึ้น  พวกเราจะรอจนหัวค่ำแล้วค่อยปล่อยไปเนื่องจากมันเป็นผีเสื้อที่หากินกลางคืน
