Drive-By Truckers @ 40 Watt Club

Last month, I had the amazing luck to be backstage for the Drive-By Truckers 3-day benefit concert for Nuci's Space

My vantage point from Stage Right, placed me directly below John Neff  playing his 1960 Les Paul Classic. (btw he is equally outrageous on the pedal steel). Keyman Jay Gonzalez comps with the quiet intensity of a building storm, while Shonna Tucker (sooowweeet!) lays down a mean bass, as her soft soulful voice melts your heart. You will find Mike Cooley, mostly Stage Left, playing the heck out of his Baxendale Custom Electric, delivering his brilliant everyman lyrics with an edgy charm that denies a seemingly laconic stance. Center Stage, well, actually, all OVAH da stage, raconteur Patterson Hood cleans up on his 1969 Les Paul Deluxe, throwing set lists to the wind, he prefers to inspire, and excite in the moment, a bona fide Preacher of the Gospel of Rock.

Regrettably, from my spot backstage, I only managed to capture a few shots of drummer, Brad "EZB" Morgan, shown in the photo to the right. (where's waldo?) Believe me, his presence was felt.

During the encore, the band invited a few friends up to join them onstage. I had to include these shots because they were so full of the energy that portrays the passion and heart shared by the band and their fans.

              All shots of the band:

              hand held

              focal flash assist

              aperture: f1

              shutter speed: 1 second

              iso: 200

               All shots for the band:

I can feel the HEAT of this concert. Amazing! I discovered them last year when I was trying to listen to different artists recommended by people in the internet. I was blown away. Really great music. :)

Very cool. I will see DBT any and every time they come through my town. I saw them at Paradise in Boston last Feb. I was in the first row and could touch the pedal steel (although they do frown on that). I wish I had my camera that time. In Nov, I saw them at The Orpheum with The Hold Steady. Rock and roll means well indeed.

I also got to see the amazing Bettye LaVette at Sculler's Jazz Club. DBT backed her on "Scene of the Crime". They will also be backing Booker T on his upcoming album, along with Neil Young, See you at the show.

Jeff, I knew you would like this one. I would have loved to have seen that show, and their new album is off the charts. I heard some of the tracks last month. So, you are one of the guys who stand front and center? They have incredible fans

Bertil, I tried that technique and had so much fun with it. The pics are not my usual style, but I learned something new and it works for this tabblo. Although, I think some sharply focuse shots would be nice, too. ROCKANROWL love it!

Hey Luckas, thank you, and i must admit, I was slinging two cameras. My Canon, of course, but I think most of these shots were taken with a Nikon 30D w zoom lens wide angle to 200 ish. I will find out. I never thought I would say this, being a Canon girl all my life, but I actually loved using it!

Thank you Ken, and M! You can shoot with me, anytine, lil bro, and i fully expect to jhang with da Boyz, in turn. ;)

Mike, I provided links for the Trucker's websites, because I thought you could listen to the music better that way, instead of surfing over to youtube. Thank you for the great comment

Jourma, Farid, Den, and Jamsie, It was one of the best concerts i have attended. Especially that closing night. The music and energy!!

Michelle, they are coming to California, as Jeff said, and touring with Booker T and Neill Young! Get your tickets and take your camera, girl!

Leftie, you know how that feels to be backstage...the buzz of the whole room, the over the shoulder view of the fans, the monitors and the speakers, the amps, the wires, the feet...
Pkeener said at 8:48 a.m. on Feb 13, 2009:

All I'm thinking is.....WHAT A FREAKING COOL VIDEO IT WOULD BE!!! This is so full of energy and life, Pam. If I know you, I'll bet you took hundreds of photos. You could get some pretty great motion stuff using some slideshow software (how stupid am I????? You have I Movie!) You truly rock Pam.
Pkeener said at 10:12 p.m. on Feb 14, 2009:
Patty! you know me so well. I took around 200, and it was soo hard to decide what to cut. I never thought of trying imovie. coolness! Thank you for the great idea.

Hey, guys! thank you for the great comments, and I strongly suggest you see The Truckers, if you get a chance.

Eduardo.affonso said at 2:48 p.m. on Feb 15, 2009:
Quite energetic (or should I say feeric?). Static, posed, focused photos would never portrait a whow like this.
Welshchick said at 3:05 p.m. on Feb 15, 2009:
Thanks for letting us in to the concert~ I feel like I'm right there!
Gerardfotografeert said at 5:10 p.m. on Feb 15, 2009:
Wha a lot off energy, great tabblo. "Moved photos" are often regarded as having failed, but in this case is the motion the force of the picture, powerful, rhythmic and full of passion, as it should. Excellent work as usual.
EMA said at 7:56 p.m. on Feb 15, 2009:
Fantastic shots! So dynamic! We can feel the music in them! Great tabblo!

AliDar said at 12:17 p.m. on Mar 7, 2009:
I can SEE the music in these! These are perfect Pam; with your perspective, they fill the space like giants hitting their heads on the ceiling. ... I didn't even know there was an F1!!!
Pkeener said at 12:40 p.m. on Mar 7, 2009:
Dar, I didn't either, but by adjusting the manual settings to allow for the time exposure, that's where the it stopped. Thank you for taking a peek. Kris, Jude, Deb, and George, I had so much fun being there and taking the pics. Eduardo, Gerard and Rhonda and Bobbie, you should check out the links to fully enjoy the Truckers music.
Leftofcenter said at 3:01 p.m. on Mar 7, 2009:
while I was in Music Madness I saw this one, had to view it again. love this sort of tab. you have to be a musician or a musican's mother to appreciate these shots. whatever you did, the atmosphere of the club just jumps at you, the "vibe", its dark, hot, there's cold beer and groovy music. and the guys are having a ball on stage. jamming. living out their passion.
Pkeener said at 3:07 p.m. on Mar 7, 2009:
Leftie, thank you for stopping by again. I know you have been there, backstage. the energy is so high, and each performance unique. You nailed it on the head. living out their passion. Artiss...
JeffS said at 9:31 a.m. on Apr 19, 2009:
The first shot may capture the energy best, but I think my favorite is the one of Patterson heading toward the camera. Like an athlete near the end of a game, they leave nothing on the field. And while I appreciate hand-built custom guitars, the goldtop Les Paul may be my all-time favorite.
Pkeener said at 10:23 a.m. on Apr 19, 2009:
Jeff, you know, that is one of my fave moments. Being confined to that area, most of my shots were from behind Patterson. It was near the end of the show, before the encore. The feeling was very much as you described. Full of energy and strength, and knowing you had a good go.

The goldtop Les Paul is about the coolest looking guitar, ever. Of course, it's not just about the looks ;)
