Boitatá

"Cordão do Boitatá" is one of the newest street bands in Rio.

It was named after a mythical Brazilian creature, a snake of fire that lives deep in the rivers,

and eats the eyes of its victims.

Sometimes Boitatá is an ox, with fire coming out of its nose.

Photos taken this Sunday morning,  February 22nd, downtown Rio.

what kind of music do they play?
those crowd photos are scary, nice catch though! so many colorful exciting candid shots here. cool to have you as "our man in Rio", almost (I said almost) like being there!

Wonderful, colourful shots of the carnival, Edu. Shame we can't experience the sounds.

Great flow of the people! Real ocean!

Thank you, MALGORZATA.

ANNELIES: They play "marchinhas" from the 30's and 40's (like "Mamãe eu quero", sung by Carmen Miranda in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjpzP5CsM-A ). I don't like crowds either, but happy crowds like this are very friendly. Hope you and PJ will see this by yourselves one day.

You are right, IRA: it's an ocean of people flowing through the streets of Rio.

MIKE: I had suggested Eric to find a way to make it possible for us to add music to tabblos. Meanwhile, take a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB7viSQEkoQ . The video is awful and the sound is terrible, but it can give you a glimpse of how Carnivals look (and sound) like.

ROBERT & ZIPPY: People who join this group usually wear old fashioned costumes, it's a revival of old Carnivals, with a more naïf atmosphere. That's why it's so colorful, so beautiful.

MÁRCIO: I didn't see you there. How were you dressed? Nega maluca?? :-P

taran,taran,taran,tan,tan,tan(no início e no final).

NOE, TWO2TRAVEL, DEBBIE, DYOWI, CELIA: Welcome to the greatest, biggest, largest, hottest and funniest popular festival in this side of the Milky Way...

RHONDA: Next time (tomorrow) I will ask my brother or my nephew to take a pic of me. I don't have any colorful costume, but maybe I can find somewhere a purple wig or some green insect antennas (with stars or hearts). Or (just to be good and surprise you) a red can can costume, why not? :-)

Somebody said this earlier, but it bears repeating. Thank you so much for sharing this experience with those of us who really wish they could be there experiencing it all with you - and really, virtually everyone with access to Tabblo (because we ALL look forward to your tabblos!). With pictures as vivid as yours, it really doesn't take all that much effort to hear the sounds of voices, horns, whistles, feet, clapping...as well as the emotions felt by those 2 kissing, clearly oblivious to the world exploding all around them.... thanks again.

The city must come to halt with all these people in the street. Must be difficult to get a clean shot of all the excitement but you did. Life is good. PARTY ON.

I am so struck by and actually I can't comprehend the number of people in the streets! I admire your focus, and I know I could not have done these photos. I don't need the music, because your photos deliver a power packed punch to all of my senses. Thank you! I adore the chubby little baby, at least i think it's a baby, but who knows? It could be a midget, after all, it IS Carnival!

M U I T O L E G AL !!!

Moorlerche said at 11:43 a.m. on Feb 28, 2009:
Such crowds! How did you manage to make such amazing portraits in these human masses? I think tabblo should add the possibility to underly the tabblo with sound. I would love to hear the music and the noises of the street. It already seems to materialize in my ears, but just merely.
