Happy Birthday, Rio!

Rio de Janeiro

is now

444 years old.

It was founded on

March 1st 1565 as part of the Portuguese effort of gaining control of the French colony of

Antarctic France, which had been created a little earlier by Nicolas Durand de Villegaignon.

If Portugueses hadn't won, I would be able to read Thierry's comments without Babelfish - but, on the other hand, this lovely city would probably be known as

Fleuve de Janvier

instead of

Rio de Janeiro.

Hmmm, I must confess I'm glad Frenchs have been defeated.

These photos were taken last Sunday, Rio's anniversary, at the Botanical Garden.

This magnificent garden was created by the Prince D. João (later King D. João VI of Brazil and Portugal), in 1808.

These images were meant to be posted that very Sunday,

but the day was so beautiful I thought it would be a waste of time not to enjoy it until the sun sets.

So, Happy (belated ) Birthday, Rio!

Fleuve de Janvier??? I DON'T THINK SO!!!! :))) brilliant photography as usual, another favorite!!
ps: are you sure it was "botanical" and not "genetics"?? (JUST JOKING!)
Pachito said at 8:36 a.m. on Mar 3, 2009:
Would have been nice to travel to a French speaking Brazil but then on the other hand we would take all your football players and they would play for our national team and we would even be stronger ;-)

Parabéns a você Cidade de Deus!!!

I love RIO! I love this tabblo wow. so many great images of the plants and flowers. I like the Redeemer reappearing throughout the tabblo. Thank you, Edu and congrats! The tourism board should be so lucky to have your images! I love #21 (i think) the Road lined with Palms. Perfect layout for this one

Thank you all for joining me through the alleys of the Botanical Garden - DAVID, PAM, MIKE, CHRIS, CELIA, ROBERT, PACHITO, ANNELIES, JUDIT, TEO and those who are silently walking with us.

ANNELIES: Genetical Garden (or should I say Geographical Garden?) wouldn't sound bad at all, uh? But Fleuve de Janvier (as well as River of January) would be a disaster.

JUDIT: You know you are welcome anytime, and I do hope you, Patrick and Chris will have this city as your second home.

PAM: The main problem of our tourism board is probably the great amount of wonderful, excellent, magnificent images they have, for Rio being such a photogenic city. Mine would be just ordinary when compared to their fantastic collection :-(

ERIC: Thank you a lot! TODs are always welcome :-)

Happy Birthday to your beautiful city! Your shots of the flora and the recurring Redeemer are stunning. I wondered why the first shot was of the Redeemer facing away, but it became clear that that was the view from the spectacular botanical gardens. Extremely well done.
Memotions said at 12:11 p.m. on Mar 3, 2009:
I've never been to Rio, but these spectacular and exotic images make me want to visit. I never knew about the history either, so thanks for educating me. AND congrats on TOD!

Fantastic flowers , beautiful macros ; I like very much the reflected kid! I dont' care very much about Portuguese or French "conquistadores", I wish Rio and its inhabitants 10.000 years of peace!!!!!!!!! Ciao, dear friend.

LINDA: Our new Mayor seems to love Rio as much as I do (unlike the former one, who was a total disaster).

RHONDA, NOREEN, SUE & DEBBIE: Those giant lily pads are called "vitória régia" in Brazil, and a man can walk on top of them.

NANCY: If you look at some other tabblos, you will see the Redeemer from many different points of view - and I will never be able to tell you which one is my favorite.

PATTY & SANDY: It's my pleasure to tell you about the history of this city, this country. You are welcome anytime. All you have to do is get your visa, & book your fligh - and don't forget your cam!

PAT, JORMA, DEN, EDITE: Thank you a lot for your kind words.

LILIANA: Acho que devíamos fazer um livro, com minhas fotos e seus textos. Quem sabe um dia?

ANKE: I love cactuses and succulents, too. And there are so many different, exotic species of them in this Botanical Garden, I could spend hours admiring them.

MIRELLA: It would be great if we could have been conquered or colonized by the Italians. Well, in fact we were: we love pizza, lasagna, vino, Fellini, Antonioni, Bertolucci, Rosselini, iat, Sofia Loren, Vittorio Gassman, Pavarotti...
Zippywinds said at 8:14 p.m. on Mar 3, 2009:

Eu já havia me perguntado por que você ainda não tinha feito um tabblo com fotos do Jardim Botânico. Valeu a pena esperar. O resultado ficou sensacional. A fonte... o corredor das palmeiras imperiais... as vitórias-régias (com hífen ou sem?)...um dia bonito... luz natural perfeita...atmosfera carioca.
