~A SURE SIGN OF SPRING~

What a pleasure it is to look out my dining room window these days. The American Goldfinches are trading their drab winter garb for their cheery yellow breeding suits. It is a sure sign that Spring can't be too far away. One can only hope!

The American Goldfinch changes from winter plumage to breeding plumage by a complete molt of its body feathers. It is the only member of its family to have this second molt in the spring; all the other species have just one molt each year in the fall.

The American Goldfinch is gregarious throughout the year. In winter it is found almost exclusively in flocks. In the breeding season it feeds in small groups. Whether it maintains breeding territories is debatable.

The American Goldfinch is one of the latest nesting birds. It usually does not start until late June or early July, when most other songbirds are finishing with breeding. The late timing may be related to the availability of suitable nesting materials and seeds for feeding young.

The American Goldfinch is mostly monogamous, but a number of females switch mates after producing a first brood. The first male takes care of the fledglings while the female goes off to start another brood with a different male.

The goldfinches are always so cheery with their bright yellos. They seem to pass through Florida on their way back north.

Great collection! Wonderful capture. Excellent Tabblo with so much knowledge of the goldfinches. Loved the purple finches as well. It's always not easy to capture birds but you did it very professionaly! Well done Patty!

Thanks Sue, Bobbie, Fabio, Linda, Mimi and my special Debdog (woof). I'm glad that you all enjoy these little birds as much as I do. I actually set up a bunch of twigs in the hole in the middle of the table on our deck. The trees are too far off to get good pics of the birds perching on branches, but they visit the feeders hanging from the eaves of the house, so I figured I would make a "tree" and wait for them to perch. ("If you build it, they will come" my own little field of dreams) Finally caught a Goldfinch perching while I had the camera in my hand this afternoon. Shot him right through the window with my Canon! At close range, no less. The last shot is one I've been trying to get for 2 weeks. Hopefully there will be more opportunities with some other birds as well.

Love your 'Field of Dreams' shots, Patty. Great idea to bring our featheresd friends closer to the camera.

Thanks Connie, Jorma, Joe Whatever and Mike! I may be easily amused, but it is exciting to watch the colours of their plumage transform from drab to Vavavoom at this time of the year. I always look for tricks to bring the birds closer during the cold months so that I don't have to get all bundled up to get some decent captures. Of course, those pesky windows get a wee bit dirty on the outside, but it does create an interesting filter, don't you think? Almost like smearing vaseline on the lens of the camera. :)

Memotions said at 6:01 p.m. on Mar 5, 2009:
thanks again for all the comments from fellow bird lovers! Someone kindly corrected me on the identification of the Purple Finches. Apparently they are White Winged Crossbills. I have never actually seen the Purple Finch of the Crossbill before, so I was mistaken in the identification of the correct species. It is always exciting to spot new birds!

Oh Pam. Thanks for introducing me to Charley Harper. The works of art remind me of a cross between photos and fractals. Enchanting minimalist/realist pieces! Appreciate you sharing your knowledge. :)

This is a fabulous tabblo of your garden birds ( so different from ours). What a clever idea to make a perching tree to bring the birds closer. The last picture is a real winner!
