Montjuic and the Olympic Park, Barcelona

Montjuïc is a hill overlooking Barcelona to one side and a panoramic view of the harbour on the other. The Castell de Montjuïc largely dates from the 17th century. The top of the hill is reached by using a cable car. Part of the slopes are covered with a well attended park and gardens. We took the cable car up and walked down  through the gardens to the Olympic Park.

Montjuïc was selected as the site for the1992 Summer Olympics, including the opening and closing ceremonies and also hosted many other events that centred on the Olympic stadium. The 65,000 seated Olympic Stadium was built in 1929. It was intended to host an anti-fascist alternative Olympics in 1936, in opposition to the1936 Berlin Olympics. These plans were cancelled due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War.

Beautiful photos of a very exciting place, Celia! Barcelona seems to challenge us to different things all the time. That's why we have so good artists from Catalonia. You showed us the Olympic stadium. It reminded me how they lit the Olympic Flame. Everybody can see it on this video:

Only in Barcelona!

Celia, thanks so much for this more than a tour in such energetic place!

Thank you all for your nice comments.
Fabio thank you for adding the link to the lighting of the Olympic Flame. Barcelona has become a special city for me.
Loes you must have seen so many changes since 1963.Most notably have you been watching the building of La Sagrada Familia over the past 45 years?

Thank you Celia for taking me on this leasure trip, while it is grey and wet outside. I feel revived by the sunniness of you pictures. They simply make me feel good.
