Montjuïc is a hill overlooking Barcelona to one side and a panoramic view of the harbour on the other. The Castell de Montjuïc largely dates from the 17th century. The top of the hill is reached by using a cable car. Part of the slopes are covered with a well attended park and gardens. We took the cable car up and walked down through the gardens to the Olympic Park. |

Montjuïc was selected as the site for the1992 Summer Olympics, including the opening and closing ceremonies and also hosted many other events that centred on the Olympic stadium. The 65,000 seated Olympic Stadium was built in 1929. It was intended to host an anti-fascist alternative Olympics in 1936, in opposition to the1936 Berlin Olympics. These plans were cancelled due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. |
