Day Zero

... and I'd say a short prayer to thank God for letting me be a part of it all.

One of my favorite rotations during training was the Nursery rotation.  As a "catcher" your task for an entire month would be to "catch" newborn babies as they are delivered.

Each time the toxicity of catching twenty, sometimes thirty babies in a 24-hour period had passed, and I finally had some quiet time to myself (usually during the short walk home), I'd look back to the day that had passed....

The goal was to make the newborn's transition from life in the mother's womb to life in the real world as smooth as possible - by keeping him warm and dry, stimulating him to breath, and then when all's going well, introducing him to his mom so that he'd latch on and begin breastfeeding.

It was such an important role, being one of the key persons to welcome an infant into life and to help ease the mother into her new role as a parent.

... I'd think about all the drama, the emotions, the miracles that I'd been surrounded with...

WOW! Myles!!! You should share this to everyone in the tabblo community!!! What a great, great first tabblo! Hahaha! I'm so happy that I introduced you to this site. :)

This is just ridiculously good. I love the last picture. Ang galing!

Glad to hear that you also find tabblo addicting. That's what kept me in this site also. LOL.

I want to see more, Doc! :)
Sirnicolay said at 6:10 p.m. on Mar 8, 2009:
Hmmm I think that the title can be changed to "Catcher" or something like that. Teehee. :)
Mrsfabulous said at 8:00 p.m. on Mar 8, 2009:
Thank you, James, I'm so happy you showed us how to do this!! I wanted to try and make one anyway, but it probably would have taken me weeks to figure out without the session in Cubao :) So you think it's ready just the way it is? I'll try and figure out how to share it now.

I'll think about the title, but for now it will remain that way. Day Zero is the infant's first 24 hours of life, and I made this on MY Day Zero in Tabblo :)
Sirnicolay said at 8:37 p.m. on Mar 8, 2009:
Ah ok. Then that makes the title perfect. Haha! :) Galeeeng!

Please show this to everyone! :) It's so good! Haha!

Thanks for commenting, ANdre...

Myles, I invited a few tabblo friends to look at your tabblo. I really think that this is a powerful tabblo... especially since most of us are not aware of this experience.

:)

Debdog said at 11:10 p.m. on Mar 8, 2009:
WOW !!! i am smiling at the term "catcher" LOL!!!! yes, birth is a miracle...even better when all goes well....;) I worked in the emergency dept for 26 years....we hated "surprise" births!!!! :) beautiful :)

Mrsfabulous, this is indeed FAAAAABULOUS! And welcome to tabblo!!! :-)
Joaqy said at 1:24 a.m. on Mar 9, 2009:
Oh! One of the best Tabblo I've come across. I love the simplicity of it all. (at gamit pa 6x6 na wala akong pasensya gawin!). Great images too. Are you one of Jame's students? You've done well. (obvious pa, gushing mode si teacher LOL!)

Thanks, James for the invite.
Sirnicolay said at 3:29 a.m. on Mar 9, 2009:
I can't stop returning to this tabblo. Hahaha! I'm glad you changed the pictures that you originally had yesterday. This is SO appropriate for a first tabblo. :)

OK I'll stop making comments first. Para akong stage dad. LOL. :)
Mrsfabulous said at 3:47 a.m. on Mar 9, 2009:
Oh, wow, what a warm welcome! Thank you for your comments, everyone :)

Dad, I mean James (heheh!): Thank you for inviting your friends to view this. Which pictures are you referring to, the ones I edited? That was for editing class, and yeah, not appropriate for this at all ;)

Andre & Jigs: Thank you, thank you! I don't know what else to say either :)

Ira & Debdog: You know what it was being a "catcher" as an intern during med school that inspired me to become a pediatrician, I think. No matter how busy it got, no matter how tired I was by the end of 24 hours, looking at those babies' bald heads and pink toes would still make me marvel over the miracles I'd witnessed with their birth. And for some weird reason too looking at their toes made me want to bite them, LOL!

Joaqy: Yep, I joined James' BDP and Editing tutorials over the weekend. I thought the 6x6 grid was the easiest to use, that's why he instructed me to use it? Hindi ba? Thank you, you guys are all too nice :)

I don't know what else to say, am a bit overwhelmed here, haha! Thank you, everyone.

Mrsfabulous said at 9:24 a.m. on Mar 11, 2009:
Thank you Cruzin, i know you have wonderful stories to tell too, don't keep us waiting! :)

Tazzari: The umbilical cord comes in different colors and the color can actually point you to things that happened in the mother's womb before the baby was born. In this case, it was a normal delivery... that baby is gonna be a year old in a few days. The other babies (the twins, the one with the tiny, tiny feet) must be toddlers by now :)

Thank you for your comments, everyone :)
Ania said at 12:58 p.m. on Mar 11, 2009:

Tazzari said at 10:28 a.m. on Mar 13, 2009:
It must be a tough job being a "catcher".. The life of the baby depends wholly on your shoulders. So much pressure. :|
Anjad said at 2:30 p.m. on Mar 14, 2009:
Wow, what a great way to start you tabblo carriere... It must have been such a fullfilling job you had, helping all those babies come into this world. Awesome! Definite one of my favorite tabblo's. Welcome!

By the way... first tabblo and already 1266 views ... in just 6 days. Congrats.
Mrsfabulous said at 3:17 a.m. on Mar 15, 2009:
Tazzari: I couldn't help it, I used to be involved in training (medical students) so explaining comes automatically :) Yes being catcher for the day is tough ... but there's a lot of satisfaction to be gained from it too :))

Anjad & Tanglewire: Thank you.
Tazzari said at 7:50 a.m. on Mar 15, 2009:
I wonder: does the baby (sort of) think of the catcher as its mother? Much like how a baby duckling would imprint on the first thing it sees after it's born? Just really curious.
Mrsfabulous said at 10:08 a.m. on Mar 15, 2009:
Tazzari: Vision in a newborn is said to be 20/400 (ours is 20/20), which means a newborn is extremely nearsighted. Everything appears hazy to him, and he can't see all colors yet. We do encourage the mom to start breastfeeding her baby within the first hour of life (sometimes even while she's still on the OR table) - it's one way for a mom to form an early bond with her baby.
