It's March in Nebraska... again...

Yesterday a friend and I drove to Grand Island for lunch and to see the sand hill cranes...

It's hard to tell in photos but the cranes are 3-4' tall with a wingspan of over 6'...

I shot most of these photos last spring... They were in a couple of my very first Tabblos... before I had made so many friends here...

So since they weren't seen by most of you... and since I love the cranes so much, seeing them and hearing them, I am posting them again.

This year I have learned to add links to some awesome videos to go with.

I hope you have enjoyed this...  Hugs to all... Jodi

The geese & cranes have invaded Nebraska.  They are early again this year.  It happens every March, over 600,000 sandhill cranes arrive and stay for several weeks, fueling up for their long flight north.

I shot these photos just north and west of the I 80 & Hwy 281 exit which is south of Grand Island and 2 miles east of Gibbon right along I 80.

They say there are several hundred thousand geese in Nebraska already...

Look closely at the sky in the photo to the left... There must have been 5000 geese on and flying above this small lake... maybe more.

Most of these are snow geese although there are some Canada's...

We also went to the horse races... There is a pond in the center of the oval track and on it and around it in the grass were 1000's of geese...

Look closely at the sky, the ground and the lake behind the horses... there is hardly room for one more goose to land and yet they kept coming and landing...

Sandhill Cranes do a little dance when mating... jumping in the air several feet and flapping their wings... "Pick me... Pick me"

Click here for a YouTube video of the mating dance...

Gosh, and I though I saw many geese in February. ...but thousands. You might have to stopper your ears, when they take flight. Beautyful shots of the cranes. Jodi, can enlighten me, how to enter a link into a tabblo. The questioned just popped up this evening, while having been working on my current project.

So that's where the Sandhill Cranes are headed when they fly over here? We hear them and go running out to watch. We only ever had geese fly over in Illinois. Really enjoyed this and the information you gave.

My sister pointed out an error on my part... which I've corrected... there are said to be 600,000 cranes migrating through the small corridor in central Nebraska every March on their way to Alaska & northern Canada to nest. (Sandhill cranes mate for life)

I like them all but esp the way you cropped the very 1st picture! It really gives you the feeling
of the big sky out there. That's what I remember when we drove out west. We have a small sky here ;-) kim
