The lady next door

My name is Duke.

The lady next door is Debbie

She's a nice lady.

She talks to  my brother and I, pets us, and sometimes gives us a doggie treat. Then she takes pictures.

My owners are gone all day,and come home very late at night.  We have to stay on the porch by the pool or we can go out the doggie door to the yard.(even when it's cold) We do have beds to lie on.

I never get to go for a walk, or play frisbee, or catch a ball because they have no time for me.

When I was little they thought I was cute, but now I feel like they have forgotten about us except at dinner time.

I really like the lady next door...I wish SHE could play with us, or take us for a ride to the beach.

Why do people get dogs and then leave them alone????

Dogs are pack animals, they see US as their pack leader.

They want our love and attention, and they offer unconditional love.

This is a beautiful dog, and i think he looks sad :(...and I feel sad for him.

So, I will pet them, talk to them, tell them they are good dogs every day, and give them a dog treat.

That's the least I can do ...I'm just the lady next door.

The more I see of man, the more I like dogs.

Debbie that is a very moving commentary and so true, dogs particularly large dogs need exercise and companionship. Couldn't help but bring a tear to my eyes.

Debbie, this is a sad story. I guess this beautiful dog and his brother are very glad to have such a wonderful lady moving next door.

Duke very beautiful. A perfect and clever dog. His history very sad. At him melancholy eyes. He should not sit in a crate. His place - on freedom and among the liking people.

Duke is a beautiful boy...He and his brother are lucky to have such a kind lady nextdoor to give them some love and attention. I too always wonder about people who leave dogs outside. My Max lives inside with me, but also has the run of the yard. I may bitch about all the white dog hair, but that's part of having a dog.

Too bad, to see that sad Duke makes me really mad.
Tractorbabe said at 5:19 p.m. on Mar 13, 2009:
One thing about it, at least there are 2 of them to keep each other company. It is really sad if there is only one. He really does look sad and hungry for attention.....

they are healthy and well fed, but they both have a longing look in their eyes and they are SOOOO happy to see me;)
my dogs have always been in the house with me, a yard, and I walked and played with them...

oh my so sad, what beautiful sweet dog, great capture, our yard is just for our dogs to do their business, otherwise they are indoors with us, and our dogs sleep with us, well the older dog does, our new puppy sleeps in a crate we have in our bedroom during the night,

Duke couldn't wish for a better neighbor than Debbie. His quality of life will have already improved. It's so damn annoying that many people get pets for the wrong reasons and have no idea how to relate to them, or how to look after them properly.

i dont get the point of having a dog and then leaving it outside. It's the greatest act of selfishness.

To the point! A dog with a lot of space, but still in jail. Excellent picture and wonderful writing! You do great in both. Take care and have a wonderful weekend, Deb!

PS: A lot of rain in this part of Louisiana, but I still have the privilege to listen to the many birds around. Another evening I saw a flock of geese flying over. It was very beautiful, as the light of the moon reflected on their white feathers. As they moved positions in the flock, amazing lines of light formed in the night dark sky. I will never forget what I saw.
AdSR said at 12:19 p.m. on Mar 14, 2009:
So true, unfortunately. Sometimes I can hear my upstairs neighbors' two dogs wailing, clearly left alone for too long. Makes you wanna be that "bad neighbor" who called animal care or the cops.
Candlepower said at 2:19 p.m. on Mar 14, 2009:
Poor dog way too many are in that condition or worse in very small yards or tied up. Somehow people seem to think they need a dog and a couple of kids to be a family. Then once they have them they leave them to others to care for. He is lucky to have you.
Bxrgirl27 said at 12:35 p.m. on Mar 15, 2009:
Sadly this is all too often the case. Having been involved w/dog rescue for about 9 years now I know this type of heartache all too well. On the other hand this dog is one of the lucky ones who has food/water, a clean bed, a doggie door. At least he is given decent basic care and hasn't been dumped off into a shelter left to die. Bless you for being his friend - I'm sure he relishes his time & treats w/you even if it is though a fence. If you know your neighbors well enough ask them if they'd mind if you took him for a walk once or twice a week - I'm sure he'd love it.

just want you all to know, these dogs are not mistreated in any way...they simple look sad and seem to want human companionship ...which they dont get....all their other needs are well provided for , they are just outside or on the porch all the time.....never in....no walks or playtime.

Oh it's the late and not so great Patty finally back online again! I had written a nice letter to 'Duke' about the \lady' next door to HIM and spoke of how many times I've seen this happen and how sad and helpless it makes me feel....then POOF! my computer crashed!! Duke, maybe the 'lady next door' will one day meet your 'absentee people' and they'll let her throw balls for you, take you for a walk and then one day a long time from now you and the lady's new puppy coming soon can ALL PLAY! WE LOVE YOU DUKE AND YOU TOO DEB! XOX me and 'he'

A very moving story and tabblo. People act so lightly in relation to animals! Forget it they are beings with feelings that suffer like us.
Loes said at 6:26 p.m. on Mar 18, 2009:
What a sad story Deb, unfortunately there are people who buy animals and do not think they grow up.

I called local animal cruelty just yesterday - there was a dog on a SHORT chain - My husband and I were just taking a drive down a country road - poor dog on about a 1-2' chain. NO water bowl! I wanted to "FREE" him. But I was afraid to approach him but I did call and report! At least your Dog next door has the basics as many dogs do not! Tks for posting ;-) Kim

I got a little surprised there - after reading "the lady next door", the next line was "my name is Duke" and I thought it was hilarious ;-) And then I read on a bit further and shed a tear for poor lonely Duke. He's such a handsome specimen and has such a beautiful loving face. Thank God for Debbie for being around, somehow and someway, for him and his brother.

Too Beautiful of A Dog to be neglected. Debbie, Is is so nice you can give it attention. Too Bad the owners do not realize what they are not doing to give the Dogs A better life. I miss my dog, Wish I had her now. Live in an Apt now. But If I had one we would go to the beach and run a lot. Bless this sweet Angel Dog, I will say a Prayer for the Dogs Owners to realize this. Sincerely, Robbi
