Veeyah

Veeyah

To my two models, Kla and Veeyah, thank you so much! :)

- James

ps. Shooting these pictures was actually my first "real" attempt at portraits with models. Well, I did take pictures two years ago in a portrait seminar but I didn't know what I was doing then with my Nikon D40. Lol.

This time around, with my Nikon D200, I felt more confident and wiser as a photographer. Teaching photography made the experience of taking pictures of people easier. Haha!

You all know how I usually just shoot landscape and still-life. I just used my basic knowledge of photography (and some editing) to achieve these pictures. I'm happy with the results. w00t!

It didn't take more than an hour to find Via, or Veeyah as she prefers. I asked a friend if he knew anyone who was willing to be a model for free, since I really charge low in my classes (only Php500 or approximately US$11 for a 3-4 hour session of photography). My friend immediately suggested that he knew an officemate who enjoys having her pictures taken by fellow colleagues who are also photographers. He showed me her account in multiply.com and I immediately felt excited because I knew then that she would be perfect for my classes.

So I sent her a private message, and she replied immediately. She told me at first that she wouldn't be available--that if I could just move the pictorials to a different date, she might reconsider. I told her that my schedule was really fixed and it wouldn't be easy to re-schedule. I thanked her politely and told her that it would be okay--I would just look for another model. A day later, she replied that she would be happy to give in to my request--that she would be free on that day.

So, it was really great to have her in my first Portraits 101 class. She and Klarizze were very accommodating and professional. While I loved Klarizze's simplicity and innocence, I saw in Veeyah a lot of emotions--she could seem a bit slovenly yet she can also appear quite demure. My students and I didn't have a hard time taking pictures of her as she already knew some poses. I think we got very lucky with Veeyah.

You picked another photogenic exotic beauty! I always add "photogenic" because I know you can be beautiful in real life and look "plain" on film or vice-versa. cool special effects in the fist pic especially.

this is a very good portrait session, James. different poses and moods, all well captured. its not really about the person being photographed when you are doing portraits, it's about the photographer's ability to bring that person out. and you certainly have it. it's a gift, James

I'm afraid you'll soon leave photography behind and begin a new career as "model agent" or "beauty hunter"...

James, you are developping a new field of expertise. I especially like the last two pictures. They look most natural. What would interest me is, what will happen, when you work indoors and experiment with photostudio lamps using light and shadow to achieve certain expressions.

Very sensitive Sir James~ It is a delight to view these photographs! I too have been asking my friends and co-workers if they would model for me...Americans aren't real saavy to having their portraits taken...at least not the ones I have encountered...However, a few dear ones have accepted my offer so now I will have practice on new faces other than my own~ Portraiture is an exciting and challenging art as it as much to do with emotions and personality of the model~ BRAVO for this beautiful rendition of Veeyah and also for Klarrizze :^)

Thank you, guys!

I don't think I'm ready yet to leave my day job just to pursue a career in photography. I'm really happy as a teacher. :)
