Pungmul, or nongak is Korean folk music that is filled with expressions and emotions that include drumming, dancing and singing. Most performances are outside and are performed by the common people. It was originally played on rural holidays, village community-building events and in hamanistic rituals.

Overall, there are about 60 different kinds of traditional Korean musical instruments that are located at the National Classical Music Institute. 15 of these are no longer in use due to change of music fashion but the remaining 45 are still played to this day.

Drummers, dances and actors are three important groups that make up a Pungmul performance. The drumming group is first led by a kkwaenggwari (a small handheld gong player), followed by a janggu player (hourglass drum), a buk player (barrel drum), and a jing player (gong). The dancers often play a sogo (a small drum that makes little to no sound) and have a very complicated dance. The Pungmul performers all wear colourful costumes with some performers wearing sangmo (hats with long ribbons).

Pungmul uses many traditional Korean musical instruments that are divided into wind, string and percussion groups. Wind instruments consist of the piri (cylindrical oboe), the taepyeongso (metal-bell shawm), the daegeumsaenghwang

(mouth organ) and the hun (ocarina). String instruments

include the gavageum, geomungo, ajaeng, hangeum

(a two-stringed fiddle). Percussion instruments are the ones

used during a Pungmul performance.

K-pop, or Korean Pop, is the modern form of music in the Korean music industry. Korean Pop originated in the 1930s, when they were influenced by Japanese popular songs. Examples of modern music were played to the Koreas by performances organized by U.S. forces in American military bases. Instruments that are played in modern music now consist of the guitar, bass guitar, drums, keyboards and many more.

Many artists from South Korea are popular throughout Asia including China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and surrounding countries in South East Asia. Some have gone international and are known in the United States as well. K-pop is a mixture of pop, hip-hop, R&B, dance-pop and various kinds.

K-pop’s current style is very similar to U.S. pop music with hip-hop, dance, R&B, techno being well-known genres. Although they are about the same kind of music, most girl groups and boy bands in K-pop rarely disband and are very popular in South Korea. Most famous groups such as Big Bang, Girls’ Generation, Super Junior and SS501 are top-selling artist groups in South Korea. Currently, artists have released albums in other genres to suit the current trends and attract their fans’ attentions.
