Side Trip to D.C.

03/09

Washington  D.C.

After a wonderful week in Carterville, I hopped the Metro last Saturday, to take in the Robert Frank photography exhibit (check out the link!) at the National Gallery of Art.

The rain dampened my outdoors photo opps, but not my spirits. People watching amongst the Calder, Duchamp, and Rodin, was about the best way I could imagine spending an afternoon in the nation's capital.

Keener--the rain might have dampened your photo opps, but certainly not these photos. Love the diverse mix and the framing, as well as the juxtaposition of the homeless person and the Freedom Forum. So many great shots here...blue umbrellas, young woman and red flowers, and, and, and...

Simply brilliant, Pam! Even with the rain the light is interesting and you have successfully captured it - very well done.

A nice tour. Glad to see it. I just like your mix.

A super glimpse of Washington DC the good and the sad! The gallery seems to be huge and spacious. Your candid shots in the subway are excellent.

I see you have been "shooting from the hip" again Pam. Good job.

Nice opening shot of the capitol.

I loved this Pam..... You have outdone yourself.
Pkeener said at 8:48 a.m. on Mar 23, 2009:
Thank you guys! I must admit, secretly, i was glad it rained because it took the pressure off not having to record all the monuments and sights of DC. I have been several times, so i didn't feel the need to capture everything in sight.

The gallery is a wonderful place, and it's part of the Smithsonian, so it's FREE.
Jude, I almost dropped my camera when I saw her posing for her friend..shots happen! I caught her in between shots, and she looked so perfect.
Linda, you know, that is the irony of every city, and I cjust happened to walk by the homeless guy and the Freedom Forum within minutes of each other. Always feel a touch uncomfortable when taking those shots, though.
Lars, thank you and welcome!
Bill, yes, you caught me! It's very hard to shoot on the subway, but for some reason, I am compelled to do it! I took all the other shots, just so I could muster the courage to capture the man behind me! It paid off, because when I aimed my cam at him, he had dozed off!
Noreen the capital is beautiful on a sunny day...and this is the "other side" real, and beautiful, too
Joe, I chose this format and it worked perfectly... Leftie inspired me to try it again.
Hey Chance! Thank you for being there on my tabblos. I love the Looking In..the look on the young man's face..i tried to give the impression of looking in with this tabblo, although, I wasn't conscious of it when I shot the pics.
Will..You are too cool. Thank you and nice to see you again
Bob, and Leftie..I did stand in the middle of the street for that opening shot. NATCH! ;)

Hey! please click the link (Under his name) to Frank's show and then if you are interested, google him. I absolutely love his work from the Americans era..

Great mix of sights around D.C. Impossible to pick favorites....Well, nearly. Mine are of the homeless guy on the bench, who is surrounded by wealth & art in the capital of the western world, but no doubt doesn't give a rat's ass about anything that he can't eat or doesn't keep him warm.
Pkeener said at 10:03 a.m. on Mar 23, 2009:
Mike, he was right outside a Starbucks. Talk about the epitome of wasteful spending. I was touched by the shoes under the bench..
Ira said at 12:23 p.m. on Mar 23, 2009:
I go with you on these streets... I see their wonderful geometry. I see the people. Life of art and creativity. Perfect and interesting. Remarkable tabblo and photo.
Bravemoonbearer said at 1:31 p.m. on Mar 23, 2009:
TOWANDA,Pam.I love the colors, shapes, lighting and the humanistic captures. It certainly did not rain on your parade. This is a killer.
Welshchick said at 2:56 p.m. on Mar 23, 2009:
Just fantastic Pam! Makes me want to go to a big city fast! Exciting and moving~~ Bravo!
Umauma said at 5:06 p.m. on Mar 23, 2009:
Great Tabblo Pam...Lived there for a long time...great walking city for one who doesn't drive like me. the shot of the homeless man just breaks my heart..how is this possible in the USofA?
Mirella said at 6:27 p.m. on Mar 23, 2009:
A big city with great contrasting situations. You caught the idea.
Bxrgirl27 said at 8:43 p.m. on Mar 23, 2009:
Another Fab City Life tabblo from Keener!!!! So many great shots here don't know if I can choose just one!
Abking said at 8:47 p.m. on Mar 23, 2009:
Pam, you are on it again! You captured a spaciousness and white light in these scenes that make this set really different than the NY scenes. The last subway shot, the girl and red flower against the white water, the white lights of the walkway (scroll backward on that one!) are my favorites, but I like the whole set. AND, you got to see the Robert Frank exhibit!
Karsten said at 10:31 p.m. on Mar 23, 2009:
Hey Pam! So you´re on the road again...Great streetlife and art work in D.C. - never been there before... and the rain did NO harm to your fotos!!! i bet you have a cup of starbugs coffee in your hand - so that´s the best start for a trip ;-) Thanks for the tour Pam!
Pkeener said at 10:49 p.m. on Mar 23, 2009:
Karsten, it is a cup of Starbucks. I went in to warm my hands up and figured it would be a good thing to hold. The funny part was, the two barista's were i n a huge argmument. Yelling at each other behind the counter! So I order a plain coffee, just so I could get out of there fast!
Thanks, Allan. Amazing what an overcast day wil do for the light. The show was Killer. I did that last subway shot "dutch" just to see if i could!
Hey Laura. Some day you might go there on a filed trip with the boys.
Michelle, I took the Metro to the Archives station, and the gallery was a couple blocks away. It is so great to be able to do that.
Thank you, Sandy. Towwaaaannnda!
Ira, I appreciate your insight! Your city photos are so great.
Rhonda, I would try San Fran or Portland.! prettier and much closer to home.

Parce qu'en ces temps de crise,on verra de plus en plus de "vagabonds",parce que cela n'empéche pas l'art d'exister, parce que la vie est là avec ces multiples contradictions, parce que tu es pleine de talents,Pamela......,joelle

Hey Pam, great job capturing the feel of the city in the winter! And the homelessness so near the monuments is shocking ...

I think that homeless dude and Roden' thing would look perfect side by side:) Cool DC mood
Pkeener said at 5:30 p.m. on Mar 24, 2009:
wow Andre! good call. i wish I would have done it.
Hey Ginny, not so sure if it's shocking, but it is sad. Most homeless people are found n the inner cities.
Thank you Arne.
Daniela. I love the wide array of photos you can find in any city..
Joelle! Merci!

Finally got around to this wonderful piece of work! So much stands out, the homeless guy, subway and I love the lines and angles you have used :)
Eduardo.affonso said at 6:17 p.m. on Mar 25, 2009:
What a set of sharp, bright, well composed, touching images, PAM! I've been to Washington, but this is a completelly different city seen through your lenses. #15, #17 and #29 (the last one) are my favorites, but I would be proud of any of the other ones, as well. I think the rain made you concentrate in the inner spaces - and that was a very good deal (for us, at least). This is an instant favorite.
Pkeener said at 8:16 p.m. on Mar 25, 2009:
hi Pat, yes, DC is not exempt from poverty, thank you for the favorite!
Lorraine, Hey there, Thank you for noticing the differnt angels. The subway shots just make thmeselves..perfect light w/o flash.
Edu, it was not a typical photo taking tour of DC! I knew I only had a few hours and a few blocks to stay inside of. Thank you for noticing. And for taking the time to count the phtos to 29. I like that one, too. Totally unaware of me and just reading on their ride home...
Memotions said at 6:59 a.m. on Mar 28, 2009:
Lots of energy in your people shots. Everyone except the homeless person seems to be walking with a purpose. I want a car like the Art Gallery's! Very cool little vehicle.
PhotoPop said at 3:59 p.m. on Mar 28, 2009:
Were you using a small point & shoot camera to capture these on the sly, Mademoiselle Pam. Really like the street scene, the umbrellas especially.
Gerardfotografeert said at 5:55 a.m. on Mar 29, 2009:
Very well done Pam. a beautiful mix off streetshots, architecture and art photos. I like the POV in the photos, the the shot in the walkway is terrible but the shots in the National Gallery are excellent, beautiful lines, colors and light, An awesome tabblo.
Kristn said at 12:24 p.m. on Mar 29, 2009:
I live right outside of DC, and I love going into the city. There is always something new and interesting to see that you might not have noticed before. Those are some wonderful shots!
Pkeener said at 12:49 p.m. on Mar 29, 2009:
Kristn thank you. I am glad you stopped by and commented. DC is such a treat for me to visit. So many different sides to it, and as you know, this tabblo barely scratches the surface.
Gerard, thank you for noticing the subtleties. It was so inspiring to be in The Gallery
Merci, John, no, I gave my point and shoot to Amy. Just kept my trusty SLR handy and slightly hidden. The Umbrellas just lined up for me and presented themselves like a gift.
Patty, that car was a trip. so toy-like and artistic!
Mariusblack said at 6:35 a.m. on Mar 31, 2009:
this has your signature written all over, pammie! love your sense of cityscapes. great captures of the architecture and sculpture. that lady with the red flowers by the glass panels grabbed my attention, like i'm there waiting with her for someone. thanks for sharing the walk with us. =)
Pkeener said at 1:54 p.m. on Apr 11, 2009:
M! it's nice to know I have a signature. That little lady grabbed me, too. right down to her cons. That was a water wall! I just didn't take the time to adjust the shutter speed
