TEN SECOND BEST

I had some time to kill, so I put together a follow-up, second set of ten shots for the "Ten Best" group. This one is the first successful shot I took when I got my macro lens. It's an extreme close-up of the fluffy end of some sea-grass we have growing on our back patio.

This is looking up at the top tier of Escondido Falls in Malibu, California. I took the shot standing thigh-deep in a totally refreshing pool at it's base.

Got this one in the wetlands behind my Grandparent's house in South Hadley, Massachusetts. I loved this gnarled, twisted tree.

Taken in Bermuda. These tree frogs were chirping all around us, literally by the thousands every night, but they were surprisingly elusive. I finally came across this one while crawling in the dirt under some bushes. It was only about an inch long.

This is one of a series of outer defense wall towers that encircle the old-town section of Sigi Swara, Romania - Dracula's birthplace

I took this shot as we left Brasav, Romania, driving further into the Carpathian Mountains. The way the focus came out really captured the feeling of motion.

I know that a lot of people will think this one's gross, but I love it anyway. There are tons of these funnel-web spiders around where I live, and my best guess is that the dead, in-focus spider is a male that found the live, lurking, out-of-focus female to mate with in this funnel-shaped web. The males typically die right after mating.

And on the opposite end of the lighting spectrum, this shot was taken at night through a short tunnel exiting a cemetery on a hilltop in Dracula's birthplace, Sigi Swara, Romania.

And finally, here's a shot I just took last Sunday on one of the windiest days we've had since we've lived in Playa del Rey, California. I had never seen the ocean this violent in our area.

You can also feel free to check out the first "ten best" I put together here if you'd like. Enjoy!

Sean, you made great choices for your 10 best. I like your captions explaing each image. I think my fave is the wetlands behind your grandfathers house. I remember when you posted the tabs of the wetlands and really enjoyed them. I like the moody atmosphere of those photos.

This is a very nice set of photos! Have to wonder, does totally refreshing pool translate to frigid/cold?? :)

Thanks all! And to answer a couple comments:

Connie, although I'm usually sarcastic by nature, "refreshing" was actually meant literally in this case. It was SUPER hot out that day and the hike out to where the falls are was mostly in the sun. So when we finished climbing up the first couple tiers of the waterfall and arrived at this big pool of clear mountain water, it was literally the most refreshing thing I could imagine. There was even a great, cool mist being kicked up from where the falls were hitting the pool. It was gorgeous.

And Beth, I'm happy to report that the tree frog lived through the night. Or at least it was alive when I last saw it. Honestly, when you hear how many of them there are around the entire island - it's an every-night-all-night cacophony of chirping - it's hard to imagine that they have any significant predators to worry about. Maybe some feral cats, but beyond that, they seem to be a ridiculously thriving species...which made it all the more unbelievable to me that I was having so much trouble finding one to take pictures of! Every time I got close to a specific chirping coming from a tree or bush, they'd stop and I couldn't spot it! That's one of the main reasons I'm so happy with that shot.
