Moorlerche said at 1:22 p.m. on Mar 29, 2009:
Hmm...as this is a political tabblo Robya, I hope you forgive me to utter my political opinion in German straight forwardness. I hope you don't take offense, for this tabblo asks for a discussion, which I don't see growing. So I am opening at no by offering opposition:

This one-hour-switch-off is just the same like mother's day. My mom states she doesn't need that for if we would cherish her on that one day during the year, we could very well leave her alone that day too. Well, we don't do so, we pop in unasked every few days, for we hold her dear the year round.

The same with energy consumption. Are you aware that they dayly switch off the light on Zanzibar for several hours as the powerplant in Dar-es-Salaam doesn't produce enough energy to cover the needs of both Dar-es-Salaam and Zanzibar. People are running around with pocket lamps and the candles on the restaurant tables are not just for offering a romantic ilumination. On the other hand Las Vegas is still wasting incredible quantities of energy daily. Do you think that will change after yesterday? Do you intend to boykott Las Vegas?

We know at least since the oil crisis in the seventies how brittle the situation is. The global warming already been a big matter, when I was in school and that was in the eighties. But still there are people using greenhouse gases for spraying graffiti onto the walls.

Look at the automotive industry. Hybrid engines were already known in the nineties. How many cars on our roads boast a hybrid engine? They failed in that task! Chevrolet and General Motors even failed in developing cars with lower fuel consumption.

And here the personal question: Do you switch off the light when you leave a public toilett or the kitchen in your office. Do you switch off the printer, the copy machine or your computer screen, when you leave work? Or do they run on standby all night long and consume energy. Do you switch off your TV or stereo, when you have finished watching or listening, instead of using the standby button? Do you use public transport instead of a car even if it takes a bit longer to get to your destination? You can do something on a daily basis and it needn't even reduce your comfort considerably.

One big question I have is: "Will the new United States government stop boycotting the decisions made on the world climate conference, so that we finally might experience some global actions instead of local ones?" The other big question is will the European states postpone their actions due to the economic crisis. Angela Merkel, the German chancellor was nearly about doing that. Preservation of our earth and life seams only to be applicable, when it doesn't cost any jobs and doesn't increase the national debt. What does it matter that the big parts of Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg and Niedersachsen as well as the Netherlands, Denmark or UK might be drowned by the North Sea in about 30-50 years, due to the rising sea level. May I make a controverse statement: "Everybody on this earth, and especially everybody in the industrial states, is responsible, when the people in the low coastal regions loose their home. And it might happen in our lifetime and not in some distant future.

Robya, sorry to sound so harsh, but I find this switch-off thing a waste. Tomorrow it's already forgotten in the head of our politicians. We all went to school and have learned how to save energy and water and how to recycle materials. Simply do it in your everyday life. For political action it would be much more useful to daily demonstrate against the energy waste of Las Vegas. Reducing their consumption to that of a usual European metropolitan might save the Colorado river.

People, I have put this down so straightly so that your start discussing it and speek your honest mind. I don't expect your full agreement. Do utter what you truly think. Take care, Anke
Robya said at 2:03 p.m. on Mar 29, 2009:
Hello Anke, No Problem for you to express your Opinions, In Part I agree with you and In Part I do not agree with everything. I believe Issues have to start somewhere In The Public concern. This issues is a great concern with a lot of controversy. But The Optimists can gain some bit of Glory that someone somewhere rather than not anyone at all listened to this Day created for Energy Awareness and conservation. We the World need to go a far distance to allow such progress to occur in the positive move of Improvement. We can make a lot of comparisons and create a lot of debates but first and formost, Having Faith in a Project is the first step. This is only a First step towards more conscious awareness. It is a Conscious awareness that will allow more and more to participate in the future, hoping more of this does occur. Tomorrow is forgotten, But Today Exists right now and The day after tomorrow just may be thought of. With Pessimisim and Doubt, it causes less to happen and progress to slow down. I will stand with the progressive and Optimistic and Faithful ones and pray for Hope to manifest great things to happen. I suggest a great site to express all of your debate over such issues to www.care2.com it is a wonderful site where people are expressing fully and sharing and comparing and conversing and debating and voting for a better world. Millions partake in this site. Personally, I believe there is HOPE FOR OUR WORLD , And it would not take one million Doubters to bring me down, As I believe there are more than ONE MILLION PEOPLE WITH FAITH AND HOPE. Because Hope works for me and my Faith also manifests positive happenings AS I have seen such occur, So I will continue forth in all my heart felt endeavors with a smile and joy that tomorrow can succeed~~In Sincereity and I Hope you and yours have a great day!!~~~Robya
Eduardo.affonso said at 6:15 p.m. on Mar 29, 2009:
Dear ANKE, I did appreciate reading your comment, as well as Robbi`s reply. I'd like to say a few things:

1. I switch off the light when I leave public toilets, or the kitchen in my office, or any other place where energy is being wasted.

2. Most cars in Brazil use ethanol or are hybrid. The US don't support alternative fuel because of economical reasons (to protect American oil companies).

3. I save water, I recycle garbage, I tend to buy ecologically correct products.

Maybe we can`t boycott Las Vegas and its hallucinating lights. Maybe we can`t help pelple who live in Zanzibar. Maybe we can not save Canadian baby seals, nor Brazilian rain forest, nor any endangered species. But it`s no reason for us to cross our arms and let things get worse and worse. But I think any efforts to protect this planet are welcome. Some people hug trees, some applaude the sunset, some switch off the lights in protest. Some write books, make videos, join conferences. Some make tabblos, some talk to their neighbors. One mile begins with one inch, one century begins with one minute. A revolution may begin with one small gesture.

Ps, I switch everything off all the time when I am not in a room because I am on a budget and I do not want to pay too much on my Electricity bill. That helps me , and Hopefull helps the Energy Situation just a tiny bit.
Appropos said at 7:18 a.m. on Mar 30, 2009:
love the view of our big blue marble ... a for earth hour i guess every little gesture helps.. congrats on the TOD
Pachito said at 8:37 a.m. on Mar 30, 2009:
If everybody would care a little more every single day we would not need these "marketing" events.

For example, ONE single golf course in Arizona is consuming MORE water in ONE day than the r3rd largest Moroccan city Fes (approx. 1 million hab.) in ONE month.

(maybe it's that link you have there) COOL TAB luv the globes. luv Patty xo
