In Addition

I've been terribly busy lately because of teaching photography. It's such a daunting yet refreshing task to teach photography to people who have different experiences with photography and various equipment.

One of the perks of doing this is I really become more interested to improve my craft and learn more about photography--I'm also able to earn more to get a few photography equipment. A few weeks ago, I bought a second-hand film SLR with a Nikon 50 mm 1:1.8, got a new SB 900 flash, and a sling bag and another 4gb CF card.

I'm very happy to realize that my passion for this craft deepens as time goes by. I hope I'll be able to take better pictures soon. :)

Superb choice! And this 50 mm 1:1.8 plus your obvious talent will lead to great portraits! Looking forward to it, James

Yeah..My cat broke same flash...I still like him..LOL
Sirnicolay said at 10:25 p.m. on Apr 5, 2009:
Thanks, Andre. :)

What the hell did your cat do to break your flash? Hahaha!
Sirnicolay said at 10:25 p.m. on Apr 5, 2009:
Or... what the hell did you do to your cat?! Maybe he punished you or something. Hehehehe
Andre. said at 10:32 p.m. on Apr 5, 2009:
He dropped it off the cabinet high above the sea level...LOL What I did to him? Kissed his nose..LOL
Andre. said at 10:33 p.m. on Apr 5, 2009:
How you gonna deal with film?
Sirnicolay said at 10:42 p.m. on Apr 5, 2009:
LOL! What a naughty cat. Hahaha! I'm glad you did not break hell loose on him after what he had done. Hahaha!

What will I do with film? I just want to go very, very basic. Stripped down skills. And maybe a means of measuring how well I am so far and possibly find more alternatives. If I could take great photos with less help from technology, then that means I'm doing fine.

I actually want to learn how to develop film someday. Print pictures on my own. There's something appealing about those things. It's like going to the woods and seeing whether you can survive without any technology--but I'm sure I'll end up learning a lot.

You gonna do Red Room? That is something I have no idea about. Allan does this I believe. I used to shoot slides, but in the cost-effect terms its very expensive.
Sirnicolay said at 10:52 p.m. on Apr 5, 2009:
My parents used to have a dark room (red room). And yeah, I grew up seeing them mixing chemicals and printing simple black and white photos. I didn't get it before. But since we don't have the dark room now, maybe I'll try to have one someday.

I have no idea about the slides. How was it like? How expensive?
Andre. said at 11:04 p.m. on Apr 5, 2009:
Ok...I bought Minolta scanner (film scanner), but I could not achieve good results with film. Colors were off. Slides however worked great. To develop 36 Fuji Provia 100 film I believe I paid something close to $10. Scanner .. about $ 300. One scan was about 30 Mb. in jpeg and 60 Mb with Tiff.
My St Petersbutg tab is scanned slide film. And Natural Born Killers. Not all, but most of it
Sirnicolay said at 11:21 p.m. on Apr 5, 2009:
Ohh.. That's pretty cool. :) I haven't heard of anything like it.

$300 for a scanner developing?!? That's expensive! But hey, they convert film now to digital files. I think that might cost cheaper. The 30 Mb is twice the size of a RAW digital image. That's quite large!

Is there anything else you can do with it other than getting more colors than the normal film developing?
Andre. said at 11:40 p.m. on Apr 5, 2009:
I have no idea about “normal film development” Check basic “slide” colors here. Unedited:

Latemt was in Film also. Perfect example here:

However to get your film images to PC (Mac in your case I believe) you’ll have to scan at SOME point...I think..Do I ?
Andre. said at 11:44 p.m. on Apr 5, 2009:
To develop "normal" film I just go to Kodak, they do a great job, but forget about your PERSONAL style. They normalize anything you like..LOL
Snooway said at 11:44 p.m. on Apr 5, 2009:
congrats on the new camera
Sirnicolay said at 11:57 p.m. on Apr 5, 2009:
Andre, my folks own a Kodak digital lab and they convert film images (from negatives) to digital files. So they scan the negatives, not the photos. I'm not sure we're saying the same thing. Haha.

The quality seems nice when it's converted to JPEG. A bit of editing will make the pics look good. But of course, the colors seem so different.

You're right about Kodak and printing pictures. THey usually mess up the prints, especially with the colors.

Thanks for the links. I'll check them out.

Thank you, Sue :)

I agree Kodak is good with negatives, but "normalizing" everything. In my case at least. I have no parents working there LOL. Yoy will MAKE IT, no Kodak will stop you, James. Love your work. All the best.

Going back to experimenting with 35mm is brave, James. Better results for sure, but more time-consuming after being used to digital. I used to print & develop my own, and miss the darkroom and the smells of fix & developer. Great camera.

Enjoy the new camera and flash!

I - not the expert and not the professional. But this camera looks very nobly and solidly. Cool shots.

James! love it. going back to basics with the film. showing us your gear. I want a bag like that. Have a Lowenpro that is similar, but not big enough. smart choice on the flash. i love my Canon speedlite and use ot more often than you might think, for fill. you can buy a plastic fitting that works better than the little flip screen, they are cheap and difuse so nicely. Reading your comments brought back the smell of "fixer" and that I can live without!! oh and nicely put together tab!
Hhwind said at 8:31 p.m. on Apr 6, 2009:
Interesting but I don't think I want to go back to films unless I have my own lab. Great job James

I think digital is more "green" than film. Also the digital is instant gratafication.

Hi, James! Great new old toy you have there. You make me want to dig out my old film Nikon SLR which I have stored away somewhere in my cupboard. :))
Gams said at 9:55 a.m. on Apr 10, 2009:
Nice toy James, i had an opportunity to have one before but I missed it, was already sold when i asked the seller. After having my dslr I've always wanted to try and learn how to snap using the 35mm old school.
