South Gopura Gateway to Angkor Thom

The South Gopura or South Tower Gate is one of the five entry points into Angkor Thom, one of the largest Khmer cities built by King Jayavarman the VII in late 12th Century. The city walls are surrounded by a moat approximately 3km on each side. The total area therefore is approximately 900 hectares. Lining the approach to the gate on the left are 52 Devas or gods carrying a Naga a giant serpent and on the right 52 Asuras or Titans also carrying a giant serpent.

The moat on the left side of the South Gopura or Tower Gateway.

The faces of Raja Jayavarman VII each facing a cardinal point adorn the top of the tower gates

At the bottom left corner of this picture notice the 7 headed Naga or Serpent and the gods at the middle bottom and bottom right

Thank you Charles,David,Pat,Ira,Celia,Jeanine,Mike,Andre,Jorma,Connie,Debbie and Allan for all the lovely and kind comments. Charles, its an amazing place to visit. Debbie this South Tower Gateway is more than 900 years old, the temples here in Siem Reap are slowly being restored with the help of foreign countries and UNESCO. It will take more than a decade for most ruins to be restored but its worth a visit.
