The South Gopura or South Tower Gate is one of the five entry points into Angkor Thom, one of the largest Khmer cities built by King Jayavarman the VII in late 12th Century. The city walls are surrounded by a moat approximately 3km on each side. The total area therefore is approximately 900 hectares. Lining the approach to the gate on the left are 52 Devas or gods carrying a Naga a giant serpent and on the right 52 Asuras or Titans also carrying a giant serpent. |
