VASQUEZ ROCKS - APRIL 12, 2009

Without the people in this shot, the scale of these rock formations could be pretty deceiving. They were surprisingly big.

Anne and I went to Vasquez Rocks out here in California earlier today. It's an amazing area with rock formations that have been created by earthquakes

moving the ground around over the course of millions of years. Back in the days of the old west, it's caves served as hideouts to bandits on the run from the law -

one of whom, Tiburcio Vasquez, the park is actually named after. And of course in more modern times, it's been used as a backdrop for

a variety of movies and TV shows, like "The Flinstones" and Star Trek.

This is a picture of the formation from the shot above in it's entirety. If you look closely, you can see a couple sitting on the edge, slightly to the right of frame's center.

There's Anne!

The formation to the right was the most visually striking in the small area we had time to explore, but we climbed up the one on the left.

There are crazy textures on some of the rocks if you look closely.

According to what I've read, it's taken about 8 to 15 million years of earthquakes along the Elkhorn fault coupled with erosion of the surrounding soil to create this landscape.

Anne took these two shots of me scouting out locations.

This is getting towards the top of the formation we climbed up on.

Poor lighting here, but I like the details of the cliff face

This is zoomed in on a small part of the cliff face you can see to the left. Some pretty strange shapes and textures going on.

Thank you all. I'm a complete nature and natural history junkie, so this place is right up my alley. The fact that it's taken at least 8 million years of shifting plates, wind, and rain to create these formations is absolutely awe-inspiring. Especially when you consider that even such an unfathomable length of time as that is only a small fraction of the earth's 4 billion year old history. It provides such a fascinating context to life and the impact we've had on the planet as a species in the brief time we've been here.
