The Garment District

On the way from Hells Kitchen to the subway, we stumbled upon a few blocks in the Garment District.  The streets narrowed, and were cast in shadow from the skyscrapers, providing the flat light you love for skin tones, but not for capturing bolts of gorgeous fabric. I hope you can imagine them in technicolor, spilling all over the cramped shop interiors and amazingly dressed windows.

Yo, PK. Love that first pic of the woman lost in a sea of color. She looks confused, with too much choice laid out before her. Better too much choice, though, than just Henry Ford's black Model T. I think that color subconsciously affects our mood, lifting or depressing our outlook. Great set.

All that lovely material. Everything you'd ever need. Great shots ! !

James said it best when he referred to this tabblo as "Vibrant." Great work!
PhotoPop said at 8:28 a.m. on Apr 17, 2009:
Looks like someone spilled a tray full of paint on to a swirling room The woman in the first pic looks like part of the shop, camouflaged by the colorful fabrics. Living colors in the shadow of skyscrapers, nicely done.

Lost in a sea of bright colors and bold patterns. Another segment of life living in NYC. Like how you open with the woman swallowed by all the colors and end with her as she appears to be trying to make her way out. And TOD--Killer.
Eduardo.affonso said at 9:54 a.m. on Apr 17, 2009:
Looks like I'm in India, Turkey, Morocco... Which one is the best: first or last photo? I'll never get to know... Both you and NY are full of surprises.
Pkeener said at 9:59 a.m. on Apr 17, 2009:
oH my gosh! Stayed up late making this and just woke up to my TOD! wow. This is quite a surprise. TGIF!!
First, I hope you guys check out the link up there. The Garment District has a rich history.

Pam, what a lovely, vibrant TOD. What a wonderful place for a wander!
Pkeener said at 10:28 a.m. on Apr 17, 2009:
Edu! you crack me up. I just loved how the woman and her hat just fit right into the sea of bolts. And like Linda said, there was a suble difference in both shots, so I had to include them both.
Thank you Teo
Saul, I am sure you have been there and done it, it was hard to really get good shots, as Tunde pointed out, for fear of being questioned, or chased off. Im not sure how I could have prepared for better exposure, I tweaked it up on a few of the shots, but I am not a Photoshop layeering kinda girl. This made me think abou tit, though!
ANdre, you need to meet me there on top of the Empire State Building, but be very careful of the Taxis as you are crossing the street!
Thank you Pachito, yes, it is the center of the Industry for the USA!
Hey Bob, I think your sweet fisheye might have put to good use!
Mike a little color therapy never hurt anybody!
Oscar, thank you for your comment and Noreen, it is amazing. We were drooling over the exquisite fabrics, laden with sequins and hand stitched designs...
James, it goes beyond vibrancy for Leftie, she just seems to get me and when I took those shots last fall, I knew I had one in the bag for her.
Robbi are you in the industry? It is a true art form to design textiles.

NYC IS full of surprises. This is quintessential NYC, the hustle and bustle and people making a living however they can. I lived there for 26 years and never got to see it all. Garment district was one of my favorites. That and the East Village.
