Hinduism

Hinduism is India's largest and oldest religion, with more than 700 milion followers.

Hinduism beliefs emphasizes a strict caste system, stressing that each person belongs to a certain social group. This is determined by karma, the sum of all your good and bad deeds.

Buddhism

Buddhism is one of India's major religions. It is founded by Siddhartha, who was once a king but gave up his throne to find Nirvana.

According to the 4 Noble Truths in which Siddhartha realized during his seven weeks of meditation and fasting, the Eightfold Path is the way to reach Nirvana (perfect peace).

Islam is a monotheistic religion. It was introduced through the prophet Muhammad.

Islam's main religious text is the Qur'an. It is a book of guidance for Muslims.

Christianity

   Christianity is the third largest religion in India, and came to India in the 1st century.

   Christianity is a monotheistic religion, and the messages from God is brought to the people by Jesus Christ, son of God.

Jainism

   Jainism originated in India. The main goal of Jainism is to achieve Moksha, or enlightment through a non-violent path.

   The founder of Jainism is Mahavira, an Indian sage.

Sikhism

   Sikhism takes up about 2% of India's population, and most Sikhs live in Punjab. They are heavily influenced by a military tradition.

Sikhism is founded by Guru Nanak, the first of the ten Sikh Gurus.
