The Six Major Religions in India

The picture on the left shows reincarnation. Buddhists believed that one could obtain enlightenment by going through cycles of birth, life, and death.

The picture above on the right shows Prince Siddhartha Gautama in meditation under a tree. Through his meditaiton and fasting, he was able to reach Nirvana and became the Buddha.

The Hindu god Ganesha is pictured on the left. He is the god of success, and is one of the thousands of different deities in Hinduism. However, these many gods are considered to be part of the universal spirit of Brahaman.

Hindus also strongly believe in the caste system. The person shown on the right is a Brahmin, a member of the highest caste. The caste a person is born into is determined by that person's karma in their previous life.

The founder of Jainism was Vardhamana, depicted on the right. He was able to attain enlightenment but fasted to death afterwards.

One of the most important teachings of Jainism is to injure no life, which is why many Jainists are vegetarian or fruitarian, as shown above.

Many Christians believe that Jesus Christ, shown in the picture on the right, was the Son of God. He was joined by twelve disciples on his journeys and taught many people the religion of Christianity.

The picture on the left shows Jesus dying on a cross. Many Christians believe that he was sent down from the heavens to die as a means of salvation for imperfect humans, so that our sins would be forgiven.

A text, pictured on the right, is called the Shri Guru Granth Sahib, and was compiled by the tenth Guru, Gobind Singh. It includes the hymns and writings of the first ten Gurus, with other texts from Muslim and Hindu saints. This holy text is considered the eleventh and final Guru.

On the left is a painting of ten Gurus. The one in the middle is Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, and he was the founder of the Sikh faith. He began to preach the way to enlightenment and God after he received a vision. After his death, nine other Gurus took over his work. These nine Gurus are considered the reincarnations of Guru Nanak.

The founder of Islam was Muhammad, on the left. Muhammad's role as the last prophet was to clear up any errors made by previous prophets such as Abraham and David, and to purify the faith. There are two sacred texts, the Quran and the Hadith. The Quran were words of Allah that were given to Muhammad, while the Hadith was a collection of Muhammad's own sayings.

One important duty of Muslims is to perform the salat, or pray, five times a day while facing Mecca. Many Muslims do this in mosques, as shown on the right.
