I didn't know about the rock climbing area or the Buddha statue when I joined the hike. You could just imagine how thrilled I was when I first saw it from afar. Apparently that area used to be a sandstone quarry for the stones used in the moat of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. There's a marker near the statue indicating that the Buddha was sculpted on one side of the rock mountain in 1940s. For what reason, I don't know. I also have no idea who did it. My Japanese friends noticed that the features of the Buddha was more like the ones in South Asia and not the usual plump image like in Kamakura...
