As You Like It

Having given it considerable thought, I think I would rather lose an arm, than not be able to read or write.

~ Michael Kerr

The girl in the straw hat.

Reading can, on occasion, allow us to put our problems aside for awhile, and enable us to visit places throughout history, meeting many diverse characters, as we join them on adventures that we may never make outside the covers of a good book.

Reading enriches the mind, giving insight to every imaginable subject: to amaze, gladden, frighten and enlighten us.

READ, READ, READ.
(William Faulkner) I love this one, Fox. There's nothing like the "old" quaint little neighbourhood bookstore you can still find in Europe. I'm a bookworm and I BUY them, keep them, dust them, have tea with them. Feed your head.

Great Mike, I love book stores. nice quote from Kerr. Have you been to Foyles? I loved the place.

Mike, you are right, they can take everything from me but not take the books. They are my carriage. I go with them anywhere, without leaving the chair. This tabblo is, for me, one of the most expressive.

I'm not going to ask, Fox ;)

Chilla said at 9:12 a.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
Super Tabblo. Book shops are irresistible and it is so nice to see old traditional bookshops here. So many have disappeared with the major stores like Waterstones taking over, not to mention Amazon!
I can never go anywhere without a book, food for the soul! I just wish I had half your gift in writing! I really like the composition of this Tabblo Mike.
YorkJodi said at 9:16 a.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
I could spend hours in a bookstore... what fun these would be!!
I'm going to have to look for that book about "Sir Stinkysocks" for the grandkids... ;-)
Pattymaryclare said at 9:35 a.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
As Mr Kerr put it so I've always sorta paraphrased..."I could not live without books music and well....water!" lol Books and I have had an ongoing love affair since before I started Grade One. (also partly why I NEVER get enuff sleep! lol haah) luv Patty xo p.s. thanks for the nice bookstore mooch Mikey!

Way cool subject for a tabblo !
Wildthing said at 10:14 a.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
Thank you all for the comments. As for MR KERR.......that's the pseudonym I use for the crime thrillers I've written and will most likely never get published:)
Wildthing said at 10:15 a.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
Hey, SCULLY..........CHESS!!!
HtD said at 10:16 a.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
You have to be richt, we have te read books. And not only use Wikipedia and internet newspapers.
Pattymaryclare said at 10:30 a.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
Well then Mr Kerr aka Mikey aka Wildthing.................get out there and get PUBLISHED.. All of us here KNOW you're an excellent writer. 'Likely never' you say? HAVE YOU SUBMITTED your thrillers?? which I'm sure they are! There was a way old commercial here in North America that reminds me of this (think it was for Kool-Aid or some such) "Let's get Mikey - he'll try anything!!" pmc out again xo p.s. anyone who reads voraciously as do I, ususally tries their hand at writing too...then thinks they are no good compared to what they're reading...plus they could be spending all that valuable writing time, reading!!!! lol
Wildthing said at 10:31 a.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
Thanks, HENK. Books are so user-friendly. There to pick up and read wherever you are, whenever you want.
Wildthing said at 10:38 a.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
Well, PATTY. Problem nowadays is, you have to have a literary agent. None of the publishers accept unsolicited manuscripts anymore. And agents look after their existing clients and take on very few new writers, especially in times of general recession. One of the better agents here recieves 1000 submissions per month, and takes on two or three new authors a year. I write because I love doing it, and send off the odd submission, but will not be holding my breath:)
Pattymaryclare said at 10:57 a.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
Ay! there's the conundrum then!! (much better cool word than 'rub' huh? lol).....make what's known as a 'chap book' self published...I'm sure quite a few of us here would like to buy!?! Get on that and get back to me wouldya' ?!? (SMILE)
Wildthing said at 11:04 a.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
Most writers who go the route of self or vanity publishing end up with a pile of books, and a depleted bank balance:)
Pattymaryclare said at 11:15 a.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
grrhhhhhhhh! and i've NEVER heard it called 'vanity' publishing.......just make a 'few' for your family and friends bratman! double grrhhh lol haha (great new avatar too...hiding you face again?!? lol) xo pmc TIRED TO SEND THIS ON USER TO USER - didn't ever go........AGAIN!
Wildthing said at 11:21 a.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
They don't just run off a FEW copies for family & friends, PATTY. If I am to ever get published, it will be because someone sitting behind the right desk, on the right day, sees my work, - in the slush pile they are rejecting one by one - likes it, and is prepared to take me on as a client.
Hhwind said at 11:24 a.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
Thanks Mike I remember reading the whole series of Famous Five by Enid Blyton
Pattymaryclare said at 11:27 a.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
Well over here when I once took some creative writing workshops, they spoke of self publishing meaning YOU DO IT....maybe google it or something? (not necessarily to sell but to give as gifts and/or actually have the HARD COPY BOOK legacy.... as did my father write his memoirs and we all have them - many ways to bind a book together if you look into it) I WONT SAY ANY MORE on the subject. I DO WISH THE USER TO USER FUNCTION was WORKING!!!!!!!!!!

Oh what a world it would be if we couldn't read or write ! ! Heaven forbid. Good one Mike ! ! ! !
Wildthing said at 1:31 p.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
Thank you all. It's refreshing to know just how important reading is to everyone.
Wildthing said at 1:53 p.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
DAVID: Your comment about how expensive books are becoming reminded me of when I was a young boy; my mother and I would walk the two mileas to the nearest library every other Wednesday evening to borrow books. While my mother chose titles for herself and my father, I would explore the aisles, excited by the high walls of books on either side of me, and by the unique smell of old paper and bindings. Just the choosing of books was an adventure. Now, as well as buying books from mainly discount stores or Amazon, my wife and I swap books with family and friends. Not a day goes by that I do not read, or write words in a way I have never written them before.
Wildthing said at 1:55 p.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
miles....not mileas:)

Mike--Well constucted tabblo on one of my favorite subjects--books and writing. I used to write short stories and did get an article published for $$$. Ahhh, but that was a long time ago. But I couldn't live without my books. I have them in every nook and cranny in my house. They give me comfort. Sometimes I just stare at the book shelves and admire my collection. I have a good feeling about your writing--you will get published one of these days.
CANDYCANE said at 2:32 p.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
THIS IS A GOOD ONE MIKE. READING OPENS UP THE MIND TO SO MANY THINGS. I DON'T READ VERY MUCH, BUT I SHOULD. BUT I LOVE THIS TABLOO. RHONDA
Wildthing said at 2:47 p.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
LINDA: I know how you feel about books. We need more space for more shelves. And I hate parting with them. I've read many of them several times over the years. I like fiction as a rule: fast-paced, with characters to both love and hate, and a strong plot to keep me interested. RHONDA: Reading is such a personal endeavor. And it takes you away from the mundane, when need be.
Mirella said at 2:59 p.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
Mike, you know I'm addicted to books....so I love the bookshops wher I can touch the book, smell them and choose, suffering not to be able to have them all. They were and are my friends in good times and in bad times.I want your books too..............Chapter after chapter, make Tabblo after Tabblo with them, please! Ciao!!!!!!!
Wildthing said at 3:07 p.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
Thank you for your comments, MIRELLA. If this were a writing site, I would serialize a book on it, just for fun. But photos are the staple diet of tabblo. Should I wever be published, then I promise you a copy. Although most of what I write is a little dark and slightly unwholesome in parts: A cross between Thomas Harris, James Patterson and their ilk.

Gumpsmom said at 6:45 p.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
I love this! I am an avid book-worm who swaps books with friends to help defray the rising cost of buying them. Even swapping them, there are quite many that I choose to never give up. They take up valuable space in my home, but I feel it is well worth the lost space to be able to find comfort in the stories they hold.
Buschinho said at 6:49 p.m. on Jun 9, 2009:
