What a find! Well taken series Pam. So many good shots it's hard to pick faves but I'm gonna say the first one. Dead end...very cool. The lock and the red sided structure very nice.
Oldbogus said at 12:28 a.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Nice attention to detail, Pam, with the Kansas license plate on an old truck in Colorado! While technically a ghost town, obviously someone lives in the salmon-colored house. Why, I have no idea! Winters are brutal there. Nice Tabblo.
Abking said at 12:37 a.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
It fell out of the sky from Kansas! I like the toothy #7; the fore, mid and background colors in #1; the deco door knob creepily locked; all the aged weathered colors and forms holding their own in the Como, Colorado mountain meadow.
Umauma said at 12:55 a.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Well Done Pam! so many great shots!! a sadness of times' ravages...beautiful crisp shots...

Pachito said at 2:41 a.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Really great shots...sometimes it is worth stopping on the highway. What I do not understand is how someone could just abandon his Volkswagen...?
Pachito said at 2:41 a.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
TOD is in the air... ;-)

Well, first of all, Thank you for all your great comments and Tabblo of the Day! Eric, I think the subject matter and the inspiring light that day made a perfect combo for taking photos, and I am thrilled that you chose this for TOD!

We were on a Sunday Drive on our way to Breckenridge Colorado, and decided to take the long way through South Park and we were in need of a rest stop, so we took a quick detour into Como. Como is a bit of a ghost town, with the rusted cars and abandoned out buildings, but The Mountain Man Museum was open and we enjoyed poking around for a bit before we got back in the car.
Here according to Wikipedia, although I don't think it's always a reliable source, they did a good job on this one:
Como, Colorado is just off Highway 285 in South Park, Colorado, which is a grassland basin, approximately 10,000 ft (3,000 m) in elevation, in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado. It encompasses approximately 1,000 square miles (2789 km² or 640,000 acres) around the headwaters of the South Platte River in Park County approximately 60 mi (100 km) southwest of Denver.

Patrick, that Karmamn Ghia was an amazing study and will have a tabblo of it's own next.
Mikey, Dead End is my fave, too. thank you
Leftie, Thanks! Felt good making a tab again!
Thank you Gams, and welcome to my tabblo
Doreen, it was an interesting mix of abandoned and inhabited.
Allan, you never what will land from the sky when you live next door to Kansas. thank you for your comment, I was also struck by that plate.
Michelle, rust to dust to rebirth. But, I thik it will be quite a few lightyears for that Car to become powder!
Hi Gayle! thank you!
Celia, yes sad but so beautiful set amongst the greening grass and trees
Joe, I did a few in B&W, but i wanted to show the oxide in color! I agree, with you, though
Mariusblack said at 9:51 a.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
congratulations on TOD, pam! my choice for the day as well. =)

Kirk, you know how excited I got when we walked upon that old van ans swing set.
Pattymaryclare said at 10:43 a.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Hey Keener you did it again....making ugly look pretty! (SMILE) interesting to note the old license plate is 288 sitting near hwy 285 - and looks like it came all the way from Kansas? (tornado perhaps?!? LOL) Awesome set! Patty
Pachito said at 10:47 a.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Can't wait to see the Tabblo dedicated to the Karmann Ghia.
Debdog said at 11:04 a.m. on Jun 16, 2009:

Hi Pam,
You have done it again. Wonderful shots. Congrats on TOD.
Janer said at 11:54 a.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Another favorite set, I love your take on this desolate and yet 'homey' ghost town. Congrats on the TOD!
Moabjeeper said at 11:55 a.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Pam,
Was the 4wd road from Alma over Mosquito Pass to Leadville open?
Bravemoonbearer said at 12:16 p.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
What a gem of a find, weathered colors and rust.Congrats on TOD as it is well deserved.
AdSR said at 12:24 p.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Graceful degradation, not so much... :)
Chaitiamma said at 12:33 p.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Thanks Pam, you are showing me to look at life from another angle. Congrats, a well deserved TOD !!!
Pkeener said at 1:10 p.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Bob, I am not sure about that road, but the road up BOREALIS PASS was closed. We were planning to explore it, when we stopped in The Mpuntain Man store, we mentioned that we were going to head in to Breckenridge via the pass, she told us not to even try as the pass was still closed.
Candlepower said at 1:12 p.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Wonder how long its set empty and why. A great story there. Excellent Tabblo! A Favorite!
Pkeener said at 1:16 p.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Thank you, David, as your life views are so interresting to me.
Arthur, Graceful Degradation sounds like a perfect title
Sandy, I was thinking that very thing. A gem of a find
Jane, thank you! It makes a great photo field trip.
Stan, that sign was so great. I took several shots. The sky made it seem so foreboding with the skulls and all
Deb, Como is almost to Fairplay, and its set back from the Highway.
Patty, thanks! Hunter S would have had a field day shooting up the abandoned vehicles! Most likely, he did!
Grandbrother said at 1:26 p.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Looks like a ghost town! That truck tipped on it's side certainly looks like something that might have an interesting, even seedy back-story. Maybe the truck of a teenage couple who mysteriously went missing decades ago on the anniversary of a serial killer's supposed death? Or, maybe just a truck that got tipped over and left to rest. Personally, I'm going with the serial killer story. Nice work, and congratulations on Tabblo of the Day!
Pattymaryclare said at 1:30 p.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
LOL re our 'dear demented' Hunter S. Pam! to PARTIALLY quote him in a way that may fit your comment...."In a closed society where everybody's guilty, the only crime is getting caught." ~Hunter S. Thomspon

Obviously, he didnt get caught shooting this one up...............thx for a laff. pmc out!
JuDeck said at 1:40 p.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Hey Keeners! congrats on TOD. Love these shots....almost gave me some chills thinking someone was going to pop out of one of the doors! Very cool find. An old gia too!
Pkeener said at 2:10 p.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Sean, you know, that's how my mind works while I am taking photos..all the scenarios that might have taken place. I didn't get a serial killer vibe, but definitely some kind of off kilter thinking, how did that van end up on it's side, and how many years it just sat there.
Pat, We did find a rusted out beer can nearby with an actual pull tab instead of a pop top. that had to date back to early 70's.
Hey, Jude, thanks for dropping by. The Old VW iwas an amazing study.
Lifequest22 said at 3:11 p.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
How could this not be TOD. It's fabulous--everything about it is Killer--the composition, the colors, the subject matter. So to pick a fave would be impossible. But the shots of the old rusted swing set really grab me--they're surreal. And of course the rust, Karmmen Ghia, doors and desolation all blend for the perfect Tabblo.
DanMan said at 4:28 p.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
It is a dead end! Everithing looks so DEAD!
Gerardfotografeert said at 5:02 p.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Wow, Pam! What a disconsolate yunkyard let you see to us, a magnificent but horrible mess. Great catch, wel taken and a beautiful lay-out. Great eye for detail such as the photo with the doorknob and lock. My favorite is the photo with the dead end street sign, marvellous work and congrat with TOD, you've deserved it.
Karsten said at 5:04 p.m. on Jun 16, 2009:
Hey Pam - ToD-congrats!! although late as always... everything is said...perfect plummy lightning for giving this scene in como a heavy atmospfere! My fav is the dead-end one - it says it all! Thanks Pam!

thanks, guys. Karsten, when the light is like that, I consider it a gift.
Edu, I take that as a highest of compliments.
Gerard, Disconsolate Junkyard is absolutely a perfect title, or name for a band! thank you.
Linda, the lone broken swing really moved me, as well. and, of course, it groaned and squeaked. thank you for your comment. Your use of the language always makes me smile.
Hi Dan, yes, it was striking to see all that decay amonst the fresh spring grass and weeds.
Neusinha, i think you woul love this place.

StacyCK said at 9:38 a.m. on Jun 17, 2009:
Great shots, Pam! Amazing how old and rusty things are a photographers dream, eh? Beautiful rich colors of a forgotten place.
Bxrgirl27 said at 9:45 a.m. on Jun 17, 2009:
Fab set! When Joey saw the old Kharmin Ghia he said is that a "buggle beetle?" I said no but your right about it being a VW! The way the colors meld together in this set is just amazing - the rust, the red barn, the wheat colored field!
Pkeener said at 2:28 p.m. on Jun 17, 2009:
Laura, Amy always called the Karmann Ghia the Bug's Cousin. that always cracked me up. kids are so smart. I also was struck by the colors in all the rust and buildings being of the same palette, too.

Stacy, thank you! and nice to see you. The great light really gave the colors depth

Rhonda, thank you!
Noe, I bet you have seen some old VW's in your part of the world
Wendy, thank you!
Peace, Bobbie
Teo, I have a feeling these parts will never make it from where they lie
James, thanx thanx thanx!
Jesus, Gracias

Way out of the ordinary, Pam! Congrets to this rusty Tod. Things falling to pieces are looking really awesome on your photos.

Oh I'm never around for timely TOD congrats anymore; I hope you don't mind my belated one Pam. Awesome tabblo! Looks like someone had a quirky sense of humour like you do with that Dead End Street sign. <G>
You're a marvel at picking the first shot for the tabblo, that first one pulled me right in and set the stage perfectly. I love the repeated orange bits in it too. ... There were alot of places like this on our way up to Nimpo lake last year mostly Indian reservations. It was hard to tell if the houses were empty or just run down. ... I would love to spend an afternoon there; so many stories to to see....

For a quick moment I thought this was Detroit in which case "Dead End" would be appropriate. Beautiful country muddied up by a throw away mentality although they make for good pictures. Congrats on TOD
Lr2003 said at 12:05 p.m. on Jun 19, 2009:
First, these are great photos, compostitions and layout are just awesome. The sad part, it reminds one of the hard times in our land. Foreclosures and out of business. It is a depiction of what is going on around us today. So sad.

Full destruction. You find interesting places
Pkeener said at 1:22 p.m. on Jun 23, 2009:
Hey, thanks, everybody! I appreciate your comments

Ira, I seem to come upon the most interesting places, usually without planning.
Michelle, I was about to send a search party for you. WOW. Congrats! Now you have a well deserved summer break. Can't wait to see your photos again
Thank you Dee!
Hi Les. Thank you for the comments on my photos and welcome to my Tabblo. It is sad, but I think this place has nothing to do with the present economic crisis. It's been there all along for these folks, I guess.
John, I think that mentality is what irks me the most about the collective conscienceness of the ignorant. Tossing a car or a beer can...
Hi James. Yes, its a VW, not a Beetle, a Karmann Ghia.
Andre! Yes, it is ME. You know me so well.
Thank you Kirk! I was so happy to have this as TOD>
Dar, your observations really make my tabblos worth something. The timeliness of congrats on a TOD make no difference to me! Spending time in places like this is very satisfying and peaceful.
GeorgePL said at 10:26 p.m. on Jul 5, 2009:
Very nice Pam. It makes you wonder about the history of what you see - when was the car last driven? How did it get there? Things like that. My fav. is the "Dead End" sign.
