TURTLES AND FROGS OF FRANKLIN CANYON

This guy came crawling out of the water...

Kind of a funny look this one's giving to the other.

...right up onto this smaller turtle's back. The little one didn't seem to care, and they both just hung out for a while.

The wife and I went to Franklin Canyon Park for a hike today, and came across some great little animals.

It was mostly turtles. but there were also a few gigantic frogs that I got shots of. Enjoy!

This frog was larger than the photo makes it look. The body was probably a good 6 inches long.

The turtles were relaxed enough that as long as I moved slowly, I could get right up to them with my macro lens for some close-ups.

Crazy prehistoric-looking feet.

Caught this one straining to pull itself out of the water to do some sunbathing.

I was able to get the lens just a couple inches from this turtle's face, and it really didn't seem to care.

There was actually a fourth turtle behind these three, but this was a better shot than any of the ones I took with all four.

Some of the wrinkly skin under the shell just behind the front leg.

I liked all the algae growing on some of their shells.

And a final portrait of the turtle that sat most still and was most patient with me getting all up in his face while he sunbathed.

This is great, Sean! I love the second picture, they look like King and Queen of the pond! And the one of the three turtles on the branch. It's priceless!

Uhhh... the textures on the frog's skin is giving me goosebumps :p

I did enjoy these, Sean! Especially like the large format with the black backdrop. Great portrait in the last shot. It's a pleasure to see your fine camera work. I really like #5. congrats on a perfectly executed TOD

Thanks everyone! Didn't get a chance to add captions to this tabblo yet, but that big one in the first three shots just came crawling up out of the water right up on top of that smaller one. The smaller one didn't seem to have any problem with it. And for the macros, I just moved slowly and they let me get the camera just a couple inches away from their faces. It was fun to get that close.

I know these turtles only from terrariums and artificial ponds. Delightful pictures, especially the macros of the eyes and the toe nail. And being a frog adorer, those pics definetly ask for bonus points. Just look at these big lung bags behind the eyes. Terrific Sean. Thanks for sharing and congrats to TOD.

Thanks Celia, Mike, Anke. And Anke, yeah, there aren't many places around here to see them in the wild either, but this one pond in the park is just full of them. I enjoy the whole hike we take when we're there, but I always look forward to reaching that pond to see what the turtles are up to.

Great shots. I have two turtles in a huge tank in my house. A Painted and a Slider. These turtles look like my Painted Turtle. I'm always taking picts of them. They also climb on top of each other and just chill out. Usually, it's so the Slider won't push the Painted off the rock, though. lol

an absolute fantastic tabblo, Sean!!! The shot with " the three" is really lovely and made me smile!!!

You told me about how close the turtles let you get while shooting Sean. Nice job. The latest LA Magazine has the top 10 or 15 hiking spots in LA. We should consider taking the dogs to one where you might be able to shoot some wildlife or landscapes.
