WILD ORCHIDS

As a kid, I used to go into the woods and pick my mother a bouquet of, what we called Lady's Slippers, at the time, they were not protected.  Today they are and I have since found out that they were the orchid family.  I never thought they were very pretty and they had a weird smell, but my mother loved them.

They're beautiful.
Tishfish said at 7:35 a.m. on Jun 19, 2009:
Thanks everyone. These orchids were almost extinct at one point until we were forbidden to pick them and now they are starting to come back. We may never be able to pick them again, but it is wonderful to walk in the woods and see them flourish and also have them there to take pictures of.

I don't mind Noreen, our names are so close only a D or an N, I know who he means.

Thank you Connie and Appropos. As a kid, I didn't know they were orchids either until lately when they were a protected species.

I think they are beautiful! ... And you loved the dandelions I picked for you even though they had an awful smell. If i had seen them when I was little you would have surly got a huge bunch of them! :)

Wonderful Photography! Such beautiful flowers and there name fits so perfect!
Tishfish said at 1:30 p.m. on Jun 19, 2009:
Yes Dar, I loved them because you picked them for me didn't matter what they smelled like. They are not ugly, just different I guess. Just because we are not allowed to pick them, now I want them, LOL. We always want what we can't have.

Hello Doreen, I unfortunatly cannot read the text. It's too dark on a dark background. But I love your orchids. I have never seen such big ones outdoors. Those I have seen in Europe are much smaller and generally have a lot of flowers at their stem (like marsh-orchids).
Ira said at 5:23 p.m. on Jun 21, 2009:
Very beautiful flowers!
Tishfish said at 5:39 p.m. on Jun 21, 2009:

Wild orchids, lucky you!
Moorlerche said at 1:23 p.m. on Jun 22, 2009:
Thanks Doreen for changing the text colour. I actually thought that flower was known to me, but I wasn't sure. Here you can buy lady's slippers at the florist only. I don't think you would find them in the woods. Those wild orchids I have found outdoors are quite tiny and precious.
Tishfish said at 1:32 p.m. on Jun 22, 2009:
Thank you Anke. These ones are quite big but non the less dainty and fragile. The slipper part is very soft and you can actually put your finger in it, but you have to be careful not to tear it.
Noe said at 10:36 p.m. on Jun 22, 2009:
