North Florida Morning

Morning on the St.John's River~ departure from Ed Stone Park, Deland Florida~ about 40 minutes from my home. In Ormond Beach where I live, I am 10 minutes from the ocean and I have access to the Halifax and Tomoka River 5 minutes away. Ormond Beach is full of beautiful parks (all dog friendly)and surrounded by water. A few weeks ago, a friend who works for the St. John's River water management district took me out on the river for some early morning shooting.

baby gator glides silently~they duck under the water if you come too close

The human spirit needs places where nature has not been rearranged by the hand of man.  ~Author Unknown

The St. Johns River (officially Saint Johns River, but commonly spelled St. John's River) is the longest river in the U.S. state of Florida, stretching 310 miles (500 km) from Indian River County to the Atlantic Ocean in Jacksonville in Duval County.

The Saint Johns is north-flowing, which is somewhat unusual among U.S. rivers.

The total drop of the river from its source in marshes south of Melbourne to its mouth in the Atlantic near Jacksonville is less than 30 feet, or about one inch per mile, making it one of the 'laziest', slowest moving rivers in the world.

It was designated as one of the American Heritage Rivers in 1997 and pegged by an environmental organization as the 6th Most Endangered River in America in 2008.

The river is home to numerous species of plants and animals. It is not uncommon to see dolphins in the river east of Jacksonville and manatees in the springtime when the water warms up.

Alligators, bald eagles, ospreys, stingrays, and many species of fish—both salt and fresh water—are found living in the river and on its banks.

The entire basin is managed by the St. Johns Water Management District.

It's amazing to notice how many similarities there are between North Florida and the Rain Forest. # 1, 7, 8, 11 and 12 could have been taken here, in the Amazon. It's a pity the aligators were sitll not awake when you took your photos...

First thing that comes to mind when i see these pictures is bird haven.I like the trees in the water pics.also like the alligator pic,we live in a similar area when it comes to wildlife and birds near waterways and the only alligators that have been seen here are released pets that get reported about every 2 years or so here.

If you have google earth put in Sauvies Island which most of the north half is a wildlife refuge and i live in one of the moorages on the westside in Multnomah channel.

I was gonna say the smooth as glass water reminded me of a local lake. Yrs ago, I used to love to ski on it...esp early in morning when it was so smooth! HOWEVER, our lake did not have the gators!!!
.
Great photos Deb! I love the trees whatever the name - the ones with the trucks that get wider at the waterline.
