Out of the Mist

Out of the Mist...

Above us was a clear, sun-kissed blue sky, as we walked along the path towards the sea.

A surprise awaited.  A thick mist clung to the cliffs, swirling, moving like a living entity, receding and then returning to hide the coast from sight.  Sea birds seemed to float through the fog  like ghosts on the wing.

...And into the sun.

I prefer the misterious atmosphere of the first shots, MIKE. And the vertiginous perspectives of some of these images make me think of the real meaning of the expression "depth of field"...
Hhwind said at 8:29 a.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
Wow Mike the first three pics. look like Chinese painting and the rest good for nat geo. love the gulls and the link too
Wildthing said at 8:30 a.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
I get as near to the edge as I can, EDUARDO, and it certainly is a dizzy height. The morning started off with more depth of mist than depth of field:)
Wildthing said at 8:34 a.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
Thanks, Teo. I needed a couple of cranes in the shots for a real Chinese painting effect:)

I appreciate your comments, ERICH, ENALDO, NEUSINHA, BOB, BRIAN, CINTIA, DAN, DAVID & JOE. These cliffs are at Bempton in Yorksire. I visit them several times a year. It never fails to excite me, to be on the cliff edge with so many seabirds to watch.

Magic place! Very beautiful and very dangerous! The house for birds. A shadow on the one hand and other solar party. Perfect photos.
AliDar said at 12:28 p.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
Better you than I on that cliff's edge! Be careful Mike. ... I love the shots with the fog; having grown up on the coast I have a predisposition for it, but I love it that the sun came out; the contrast is wonderful, and we got to see the baby chicks. :) Beautiful photos Mike! :)
HtD said at 1:00 p.m. on Jul 8, 2009:

Very beautiful. Grandios, Mike.
Wildthing said at 1:48 p.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
Thanks, SANDY. It took a couple of hours for the fog to clear. They call it a 'sea fret' and it can sometimes cling to the cliffs for several days.
Debdog said at 1:59 p.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
WOWEEEEE MIKE what an incredible place LOVE LOVE the cliffs and the atmospheric feel and then the sun breaks the cranes and bird captures are spot on :)
Wildthing said at 2:01 p.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
Thanks, DEB. The atmosphere was incredible.
Pattymaryclare said at 2:03 p.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
I LOVE IT WHEN I HAPPEN UPON FOG....it's a WONDERFUL natural filter and the FX here are STUPENDOUS coupled with subjectt matter (even the grey gradation of title colors|) i adore so MANY of these shots (particularly birds in blue sky flight!) the first set IS 'IT' by far dear MIKE!! i won't be one bit surprised that this will make TOD at the very least UP TOP 'most popular'!! YOU ROCK! Tho we all usually prefer the sunlight, in this case I PREFER 'THE FOGGY DEW' shots (AND MUSIC TOO ....SMILE) LUV Patty xox

OR WAYYYYYYYYYY MORE UPBEAT Bluegrass...'FOGGY MOUNTAIN BREAKDOWN' (Eal Scruggs/Steve Martin!)

Tishfish said at 2:25 p.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
Wonderful shots Mike ! ! I live close to the sea and fog is what I usually wake up to. It doesn't take long for it to disappear though.

I Love this Tab! Beautiful Shots!
Swedfinn said at 2:54 p.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
fantastic coast line with some really stunning spots!
Wildthing said at 3:07 p.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
FX, PATTY??? I don't use filters or PS. Good, bad, or indifferent, my shots are straight from the Canon's muzzle. I point & shoot, and delete what I don't like. And I've always thought that NKC is cool. He had a warm, roast almond voice, and my fave tracks of his are When I Fall in Love & Too Young. DOREEN, CINTIA & JORMA, thank you for your kind comments.
Pattymaryclare said at 3:13 p.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
UHM LET ME CLARIFY MY remarks I LOVE THE FX OF THE 'natural' filters ....i,e. "WHEN I HAPPEN UPON FOG....it's a WONDERFUL natural filter and the FX here are STUPENDOUS".

NATURAL filters being key here....I DONT have any special camera filters, add-ons either....S'OK written word is easily written or read differntly by each brain = miscommunication. SPEAKING OF FOGGY HUH?!? lol luv ya! c'est moi xo
Grandbrother said at 3:15 p.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
Wow! What an incredible setting! That natural arch cliff-face covered with seagulls is amazing!
Wildthing said at 3:33 p.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
Thought I would be receiving some form of clarification, PATTY. When I see FX I always think of those Bryan Brown movies. I'm a bit of a purist with photography, and have stayed away from 'creating' an image that didn't exist as presented - a little contrast & sharpening accepted. But I appreciate looking at some creative imagery. SEAN, I'd like to have got down there among the arches & caves to take shots, but the only way to do that is by boat at this location. Or maybe abseil down:)

Wildthing said at 5:21 p.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
Enjoyed both vids, PATTY. As I recall, Steve Martin started off entertaining at Knotts Berry Farm in LA. Didn't he do well?

Awesome pics Mike. No wonder you get such fantastic pictures, looking at that lens of yours. Thats one big lense. I looked at one like that once and it went back as fast as i picked it up once i saw the price tag. Way out of my league. Wish i had one though. Love your pictures. Rhonda
Lifequest22 said at 10:42 p.m. on Jul 8, 2009:
Definitely a beautiful surprise greeted you as you made your way along the path. Gorgeous shots, Mike. Seeing all those birds perched on the cliff walls is an amazing site. Stunning shots of the mist.
Wildthing said at 3:43 a.m. on Jul 9, 2009:
Thank you, CONNIE. Hey, ANDREAS, JM is 75.......Do I look that bad?:) RHONDA, my lens wasn't that expensive. Got a good deal on Amazon, and the hood makes it look bigger than it is. LINDA, Cliffs are one thing that Florida is a little short of:)
AdSR said at 3:57 a.m. on Jul 9, 2009:
I can feel the humidity of that mist. Good captures!
Wildthing said at 4:54 a.m. on Jul 9, 2009:
The mist made our hair and clothes damp, ARTUR. But it was nice to see.....What little we could see:)
Pachito said at 5:10 a.m. on Jul 9, 2009:

great shots, Fox. really.
[but isn't your hair too long? lol]
Wildthing said at 2:52 p.m. on Jul 10, 2009:
Depends on wot turns your wheels, SCULLY. It gets left because I've only been to a barber's once since 1969. That's the truth. I hack some off every now and then, and let people think wot they like. After all, I don't have to look at it.... This could start a new theme, making comment on hair, bling, makeup, shape of nose, etc. Could be fun, but might not endear those of the thin-skinned variety:)
Leftofcenter said at 2:58 p.m. on Jul 10, 2009:
which u are not, right Fox??? I think you're hair is super duper cool. truly. :)
Wildthing said at 3:45 p.m. on Jul 10, 2009:
Ha! I'm told I play mind games, and that my skin is as thick as a rhino's. Maybe that's all hype on my part, and the truth is I am a tortured soul, easily wounded by slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. I am, as everyone, just passing through in my own inimitable way, and with long hair, which may have something to do with viking ancestory, and was of course the norm over here until Victorian times:)
Pattymaryclare said at 4:23 p.m. on Jul 10, 2009:
ANOTHER THEORY on the long hair (which suits you and your BS ooops fantasy factor (easily wounded , slings and arrows of outrageous fortune....Shakespearean quoting and all the 'many layered onion' known as our mikey.).....YOU ARE SIMPLY A .........RETRO-HIPPIE........ (my definitition of myself long ago made up /peace/love/flower power... only i didn't do the drugs part - DON'T NEED 'EM ....high on life (or low depending on gas gauge)lol ...DOES THAT WORK FOR YA? if the hair fits, wear it! ROCK ON MR MIKE! peace luv and power to the peeps! xo just another hippiechick!

An enchanting series of shots of how a mist and the sun fought each other for ownership of the cliffs for a day! Judging from your shots, the mist won in the aesthetics category, even though the sun bullied the mist into disspation after a short while.
Wildthing said at 5:15 p.m. on Jul 10, 2009:
YC, it was strange having the sea fog in front and bright sunshine behind. Seeing the blanket of grey ebb & flow was mesmerising. Nature Rules.
Wildthing said at 5:24 p.m. on Jul 10, 2009:
Nice vids, PATTY. I still relate heavily to the 60's. That was my time, and dylan was right, the times have changed. Thank God that I'm happy to be a dinosaur and hold on to an era that was an emergence of so much after WW2. The 70's bored me; the 80's were banal, and not much else has happened to get my juices flowing. Oh, well, just another old fart now. And happy to be one, with memories I wouldn't swap for a bag of gold.....well, maybe a big bag of gold:)
