What’s the Best thing

that can happen to you

when you arrive in a foreign country, which language you don’t speak,

where you have never been before,

to celebrate (all by yourself)

your 50th birthday?

Consider that it’s the most expensive place in the world

(and you don’t have much money),

people use ideograms instead of letters (which means you are a total illiterate) and you haven’t had time enough to prepare your trip (all you have is a guidebook, not read yet).

A total disaster seems to be about to happen, uh?

Well, it can be one of the best experiences of your life

if you are lucky enough to have FRIENDS there.

Is there anything better

than meeting a lovely girl at the airport, with tickets for the train, a phrasebook and a captivating smile?

Home is where you feel comfortable, so Japan became home for me at the very instant I saw Jane.

We had been virtual friends for years, first on Phlog, then on Tabblo and Multiply. I have always admired her talent, her intelligence, her sensibility. And the more I knew her the more my admiration increased.

She took me to my hotel

(ok, to the wrong hotel

 – nobody is perfect…)

and then to a cozy typical Japanese restaurant – and prepared my food!

it is the best antidote for any jetlag...

WHO ELSE WOULD WAKE UP

AT 4:00 A.M. ,

IN A RAINY DAY,

TO TAKE ME TO THE FISH MARKET?

AND TO THE PHOTO MUSEUM?

AND TO SEE THIS AMAZING SPIDER

(BY louise bourgeois)?

Then, a delicious

(yet traumatic…) lunch with Danielle & Simon.

Danielle & I became friends on Phlog, too (along with Jigs, another dear & talented pinoy).

Everything I said about Jane applies to Danielle as well. She is funny, smart, with a great sense of humor.

Both girls are from the Philippines, and live in Japan NOW.  Simon is Danielle’s fiancé, a very nice guy from Switzerland who plays the violin and with whom one could spend hours talking about everything without ever getting bored.

the only problem with these great people is their taste for exotic food. they can eat balut (boiled ducklings!) and fish served alive...

tHIS POOR FISH WAS EATEN WHILE IT WAS STILL BREATHING, TREMBLING AND, OBVIOUSLY, SUFFERING TERRIBLE PAIN.

i COULDN'T EVEN LOOK AT IT (THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN WHEN IT FINALLY DIED).

i don't care if i have to be reincarnated as a female in a muslim country, as a tibetan monk in china or even once again as architect in brazil  -

anything, but fish in japan!

Probably to redeem themselves (from the fish torture) jane & danielle took me to a filipino restaurant, where I finally tasted the famous san miguel beer (good!), lechón, kaldereta and some other delicious dishes.

the philippines are back to the top of my list of "places I can't miss!".

tHEN I LEFT TO KYOTO, NARA, HIROSHIMA, HIMEJI, MIYAJIMA - AND WHEN i GOT BACK TO TOKYO JANE & DANIELLE WERE ALREADY ENJOYING THE "GOLDEN WEEK" WITH THEIR FAMILIES IN MANILA.

TIME TO FINALLY MEET CHARLES.

IMAGINE THE MOST FRIENDLY GUY YOU EVER MET: THAT'S HIM. THE ONE WHO WILL TAKE YOU TO THE MOST UNUSUAL PLACES, TO PLACES YOU'D NEVER FIND BY YOURSELF.

CHARLES & HIS charming wife hitomi introduced me to the crowdiest crowds on this PLANET...

THEY INVITED me to weddings they weren't invited to themselves...

... TO CLASSICAL

&

NOT SO CLASSICAL

CONCERTS...

... TO AN IRRESISTIBLE SUSHI

CONVEYOR BELT

(WITH SOME OF THE STRANGEST SUSHIS I EVER TASTED)...

CHARLES GOT ME "FREE HUGS" (THE "FREE KISSES" i HAD TO FIND MYSELF...).

WHO ELSE WOULD TAKE ME TO A CEMETERY AROUND MIDNIGHT, AND TELL ME GHOSTLY STORIES ABOUT THE NAME YOU GET WHEN YOU DIE?

WHO ELSE WOULD TAKE ME TO THE

RED LIGHT DISTRICT??

from the "black market" (ameyoko)

to a classy archery competition

 - charles showed me

so many faces of tokyo.

no tourist would know

so much in so little time,

with such intensity - and joy.

this is my

500th tabblo,

and there's no better way to celebrate it than making this tribute

to the friends i got.

some are still virtual, and others already became real friends.

thanks to all - specially to

CHARLES

JANE

DANIELLE

ANNELIES

DEE & AGNES

WHOM I HAD THE PLEASURE TO MEET IN PERSON.

HEY!! I took you to a cemetery!! the fish story is... YIKES!!!!! bwana tab, Eduardo. you really kept us wondering "where's the next tabblo rendezvous" this year, we could elect you TABBLO AMBASSADOR! :)

Peace and friendship:)
Eduardo.affonso said at 12:00 a.m. on Jul 15, 2009:
DEBBIE: Thank you very, very much. I hope you will be soon added to this list of people I've met...

IRA: A great Brazilian poet, Vinícius de Moraes, said "Life is the art of meeting". I totally agree.

ANNELIES: Yes, some weird people take theis guests to places like cemeteries, can you believe that? It's a pity there are no tabbloers from Egypt and Turkey (which I am planing to visit next September). Instead of ambassador, I would be glad to be an ordinary "tabblo trotter".
Leftofcenter said at 12:32 a.m. on Jul 15, 2009:
congratulations on 500. didn't know Niki did spiders too, she's one of my favorite weird artists. the pics take forever to download!! will come back tomorrow (I mean later today..)
Eduardo.affonso said at 12:49 a.m. on Jul 15, 2009:
ANNELIES: Did I write Nikki?? I meant Louise Bourgeois, sorry! I guess I added too many pics - maybe I should have divided this tab and made two parts - or more.

Sentimentos expostos
abstratos,palpáveis...
Dedos que respiram.
olhos que farejam.
na garganta,o engolir seco
para não perder o alvo.
o sono de pedra onde o sonho
é arquitetado.
vários pensamentos expostos na retina
declaram que serão eternos.

500?
que venham mais e mais
que guardarei como relíquias

JANE: MY JAPAN TOUR WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN THAT PLEASANT WITHOUT YOU & YOUR FRIENDSHIP. HOPE I WILL DO THE SAME FOR YOU WHEN YOU FINALLY DECIDE TO LEAVE ASIA FOR A WHILE AND SPEND SOME DAYS IN BRAZIL. BTW, THAT FISH WILL HAUNT ME FOREVER!

ERICH, MYLES, PATRICK, DOREEN, LARS & ANDREAS: THANKS FOR JOINING THIS "CONDENSED VERSION" OF MY "TABBLO MEETINGS". TRAVELLING IS ONE OF MY PASSIONS, ALONG WITH PHOTOGRAPHING AND MAKING NEW FRIENDS - IT'S PARADISE WHEN THESE 3 PASSIONS CAN HAPPEN AT THE SAME TIME.

MIKE: SAVE POUNDS ENOUGH TO TAKE YOUR OWN CHEF WTH YOU, AND DON'T RELY ON CHARLES. HE LOVES RAW FOOD, AND THAT INCLUDES CHICKEN (NOT ALIVE, I HOPE...).

CIDA: FALAR EM ENCONTROS, CADÊ VOCÊ? GOSTEI DOS "DEDOS QUE RESPIRAM, OLHOS QUE FAREJAM"...

ROBERT, WENDY, CELIA & ERIC: Thank you a lot, guys!

ANNELIES & RITA: I found not only the free kisses, but also much more... When you visit a country it's no good unless you enjoy it all the way ;-P
Charlespop said at 10:15 a.m. on Jul 15, 2009:
Wow ......this brings back good memories....they say you only learn a subject by teaching it.....it is only by guiding friends through your neck of the woods that you really discover the place for yourself. Thank you for discovering places in Tokyo that I had never been to before and thank you for this tabblo ! BTW , it sure is a surreal experience seeing things that I photographed through the lens of another tabbloer !
Hparker3 said at 10:30 a.m. on Jul 15, 2009:
AWESOME! What a beautiful tribute to your friends and to your amazing photographs and travelogue. I love this tabblo!
Eduardo.affonso said at 10:42 a.m. on Jul 15, 2009:
NEUSINHA: Nunca pensei que fosse chegar aos 500 tabblos (bem, tb me custa acreditar que cheguei aos 50 anos... rs). Mas é assim mesmo: quando vc menos espera, tá lá.

HOLLY: There are two kinds of photos - those created in pursuit of art , and those taken to register (and freeze) the important moments of your life. Don't know which ones are the most beautiful and touching. In this case, I was simply capturing what my eyes saw and what I would like not to forget.

CHARLES: These bring me back good memories, too. And you & Hitomi are always present. I know exactly what you mean when you mention seeing your "own" subjects through the eyes of someone else - I had this "deja vu" so many times in Tokyo, seeing things I already knew from your photos, and then seeing the photos we took together. Meeting you was priceless, my friend!
Charlespop said at 10:46 a.m. on Jul 15, 2009:
One small correction is in order......Eduardo, I have never eaten raw chicken. The chicken that I ate and enjoyed tremendously was cooked for about 5 seconds.....so the meat was still red...... Why do you think the Japanese have the longest life expectency in the world?! Fried chicken is not big here ! ! Here in Japan people do not use tons of oil to fry fish. I would also recommend raw horse meat, raw wild boar and of course raw beef ( this last meat is especially good mixed with an uncooked egg and soy sause ! )
Eduardo.affonso said at 10:53 a.m. on Jul 15, 2009:
CHARLES: I am not a chef, but cooking a chicken for 5 seconds or eating it still alive doesn't make much difference to me. Anyway, I do enjoy raw lettuce, raw tomatoes, raw oranges and even raw carrots.

Japaneses have the longest life expectancy in the world because other people die first, that's why.

Eduardo.affonso said at 11:38 a.m. on Jul 15, 2009:
ELIANE: Se vc só vai aparecer para o milésimo, acho bom eu começar a postar um tabblo por hora - assim atinjo o número 1000 dentro de menos de 3 semanas... Quanto à foto do encontro com a Agnes, já estou quase baixando um programa que dá acesso ao meu blutufe, e logo logo a homenagem vai estar completa.

wow congrats on TOD Eduardo...your story is captivating making one read all the way to the end :)
Eduardo.affonso said at 8:04 p.m. on Jul 15, 2009:
ANNELIES: I don't think Tabblo would allow me to tell all the details of my imersion into Japanese culture...

Infelizmente, ainda não consegui me tornar vegetariano...

AUBREY: Hope I will be soon posting something about a long awaited trip to Manila!

Liliana said at 8:57 p.m. on Jul 15, 2009:
Pero al final, ¿te comiste el pescado vivo...? Yo me moriría ahí mismo.
Ebucar said at 10:55 p.m. on Jul 15, 2009:
Agora que recobrei o ar ... Eu ate que sou chegada a experiencias exoticas, mas acho que ate eu pularia esta. Enfim...O tabblo ficou digno da homenagem aos grandes amigos. Feito com enorme dose de sensibilidade, carinho, dedicacao, etc...etc...etc...Parabens por mais um TOD. Este, seguramente, vale um Todao!
Sirnicolay said at 2:19 a.m. on Jul 16, 2009:
This is one of your best tabs, Edu. Wow. I really want to do the same thing someday--meet fellow tabblo friends in other countries. :D

It's great to have friends all over the world, indeed. :)

I hope when you go here in the Philippines it will be around April so that I would be free to show you around. Teachers in my country are free during that month, so that's the time I usually go around the country to take photos.

Damn. Your photos make me miss taking pictures with friends... Sigh.

And congrats on TOD!!!! :D
Mrsfabulous said at 4:32 a.m. on Jul 16, 2009:
James is right, Edu! Around March to April is a really great time to visit... there are a lot of very unique festivals around that time. You must let us know if you're coming this way!

ALLAN, LOES, LAURA, PAM, SUE, SEAN: Thank you a lot, my friends. Tabblo became, for me, sort of a place where I can meet friends, show them what I have seen & see through their eyes. A place to chat, learn, have fun. It wouldn't be the same without you.

ANNELIES: I hadn't watched that one yet! LOL

JAMES & MYLES: It's already scheduled - April 2010, birthday party in Manila (or Boracay). With lots of San Miguel beear - and no baluts!!
