This shot with a telephoto lens makes Boston loom close. |
On today's hike on the Skyline Trail, I explored two look-out towers. Wright's Tower, built in 1937 atop Pine Hill, affords views of Route I-93 and of Boston's skyline. One can pick out in the distance Logan Airport, Harvard, Tufts, and Medford Square. |
Some 2 miles north of Wright's Tower, taking a blue-blazed side trail off Skyline Trail, one finds Bear Hill Tower, constructed in 1910 of reinforced concrete. Beside it is an immense circular water tower. Bear Hill Tower had trash in the stairwell and graffiti on its walls, but the views were striking, including of the clustered spires of Stoneham. |
Wright's Tower honors Elizur Wright, an early advocate for and promoter of a public park on this land. |
The tower's doors are often locked. |

Again, it's the telephoto lens that brings Harvard close. |

From the highway the tower is easily visible. |

The Middlesex Fells Reservation includes four reservoirs. Evidence of waterworks is common. |

Some of us leave more than just our footprints |

The adjacent water tower's flat roof is evidently a target tosses. |
That's Boston in the far distance. |

The side trip to Bear Hill Tower adds less than half a mile to the 6.9 miles of the Skyline Trail. |
