Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

The Plitvice Lakes is a national park in Croatia, near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

 

The sixteen different lakes are separated into an upper and lower clusters and the water run down  from an altitude of 636 m to 503 m over a distance of 8  km with a lot of higher and lower falls. The Plitvice Lakes are today one of Croatia's biggest tourist attractions with a very well maintained variety of hiking trails.

 

The park is on UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979 with reason of "outstanding natural beauty, and the undisturbed production of travertine through chemical and biological action".

Such a coincidence. A collegue and I were just discussing them yesterday as he is going to Croatia in August. Such a beautyful landscape. They were actually the film settings for the "Winnetou"-films, when Croatia still was Yugoslavia - The apache chief of Germany's most famous western writer Karl
