Pingst i Svergie, kapitel 7                                                      Whitsun in Sweden, chapter 7

Och vad är det?

And what's this?

As I am mostly on my own, when I travel, there are rarely pictures of myself. Therefore I took advantage of my friend, who actually seemed to enjoy doing a photo session between the rocks.

Beckoljan stank men hjälpte ganska bra. Även myrarna bet stackaren i ben.

The forest was quite dark and shady. No wind eased the heat. The moskitoes buzzed around our ears and ants scuttled along the path. We had to avoid standing still, if we desired not to be bitten. The laponian treat "tar pitch oil" worked well for me, but you smell like smoked ham or like having stood beside a bonfire for hours. My friend was wrinkling her nose and kept to her German stuff, which left no impression on neither moskitoes nor ants. Even the ants bit into her leg.

Någon gång fanns här också en älg.

Once upon a time there was also a moose here.

Don't you know what to do with your old washing-machine. Well, have a look at the interesting Swedish example - a folk who takes recycling seriously. Get the washer drum out and use it as barbecue. The coals get well aired through the holes of the drum.

While taking a break on the small peninsula with the picknick ground we dreamt of a bath in lake Vättern at the lovely bay we saw on our walk at Harge Uddar. The picknick ground was supposed to be 300 metres distance from the junktion to the parking lot. An end of the hike was in sight. Or so we thought.  What we hadn't realized was the fact, that there were two picknick grounds. And so we walked on and on and wondered, how long 300 Swedish metres were. Or did they still count in Swedish miles (1 Swedish mile = 10 kilometres)? After a while I looked onto the map (clever, eh?) and recognized our mistake. My friend sighed. The blisters on her feet were troubling her.

The trail was actually quite beautyful. It wound throught a light and boggy birch forrest with cotton gras glittering between the trees like little stars. Then when we finally reached the dark fyr forest again we had about a kilometre left to the car. Hope spread and the unquenched desire to drown ourselves in the clear water at Harge Uddar.

Dessa ursnygga pingstliljor växte direkt vid parkeringen.

These magnificent poet's daffodils stood directly at the parking lot.

The sceptical glance was caused by a giant ant, which scuttled into my direction.

Another cloudless day had started. It would probably be the hotest day of this spring. We filled even more water bottles than the day before, because we had been a little short of beverages then. After we were ready with packing we went to our car. It obviously needed washing after a day on dusty forest tracks. You could hardly see anything through the windowscreen. We left Askersund after a stop at the gas station and went out on road no. 205 till Laxå.  The road went through a lovely area with farmsteads, forests and many a lake at the roadside. When we came into Laxå we first missed the turn-off to the motorway as there was no sign on our side. However we could quickly turn around and get onto the E20 in the direction of Gothenburg. After we passed lake Bora on our left hand side and came through the village Ramundeboda we still had a bit to go before a sign on our right showed us the way into a track towards Vargarviddarna (Wolfs's plains). The track went a long way through forest, passed the miniature village of Trehörningen and got narrower and narrower till it ended in a cul-de-sac - the parking lot of Vargarviddarna (first photo). No other car was there. We were the only people in the area. The nature reserve was ours alone.

We took the pass to Högskogs Stormosse and Södra Åsmosse first. After a couple of minutes we passed a luxury stance which was outfitted with an office chair.

björk - birch tree - Birke

Det var fullkomlig tyst kring oss. Ibland hördes göken, ibland hördes andra fåglar, insekter surrade omkring, men inget ljud av mänsklig tillvaro hördes.

It was totally quiet around us. Somtimes we heard the cuckoo, sometimes other birds. Insects were buzzing around us, but no sound of human nature found its way into this reclusion.

Vindskydd - refuge

At the refuge we found a booklet where people, who came by for a break or who camped here, wrote down their observations and thoughts.  One couple heard the wolf during the night. Another saw a moose on the moor in the sunset. The last visitor was here two days ago. He too was the only person in the nature reserve that day.

Next to the refuge was a watch stand, from where we looked over the bog. A cuckoo flew past us. In the bog we saw a single footstep of a moose. Nothing else.

On the way back we found a bird's nest on the floor.

Shortly after this bit of forest path we came out on the parking lot. There we freshed up our moskitoe protection and took a drank some water before we started out on the trail round lake Gryttan.

They look like graves to me, but in the leaflet about the nature reserve is no mention of stone graves in the area. Maybe these "buildings" have to do with the iron or charcoal winning in the area. I don't know.

Området värka vara fjärrallans paradis. Överallt flygade och fladdrade dem.

The area seemed to be a butterfly paradise. They were flying around everywhere.

Ja, dessa trakter är verkligen vilda. Det enda som saknas är vargarna. Toppenbilder.

As you say Anke, every lake is quite different! The macro shots are wonderful. I think I would have been so excited to come across the wild Narcissi, what a treasure! It is so nice to see the pictures of your in your favourite environment! Thank you again for sharing your wonderful trip!

Anke,
I had a wonderful treat yesterday - your very own Tividen Nationalpark. Today I have already seen Andalucia, by Andreas, and A Tree, by Angela. Now I have this mysterious and almost untouched Vargavidderna! I can't say much because I am still mesmerized with your set. I will concentrate my attention to some of your wonderful photos.
- Pingstliljor - Dichternarzissen - narcissus poeticus - They are so beautiful and they have the right name. Great!
- The trail with/without the flowers at at Harge Uddar - "Wow" is my only reaction!
- The washing machine and its new use - It is important to highlight the environmental/conservation actions in our Tabblos, through photos or texts. The photo that you sent from Hamburg (about trash) to the Earth Day tabblo opened my eyes.
- Gorgeous calla palustris! How do you know all these names? I am a total ignorant in these matters...LOL
- The nine lake shots - You placed them very well in the set, after the long walk along the trail. The views refresh our spirits and give us hope. I loved all the nine pictures!
- The two shots of the large red damselfly - Nature at her best!
- The larva on the skin - It is a masterpiece!!! It highlights the integration between human beings and Nature. The light and shade confirm the importance of the Sun in this whole system. I feel that this photo is a masterpiece! With it, we make a stop, and we think about our lives.
- The harmony of the rocks, trees, and green - It teaches us that there is room for everyone.
- Your pictures - Very nice to see you! Your friend did a great job, too!
- "The sceptical glance was caused by a giant ant, which scuttled into my direction." The two photos are very very beautiful! They show you in the environment that you love!
- The photos of the butterflies, nests, and flowers make a good sequence, after the initial arid scenes. It is like doing the hard work first, in order to enjoy the goodies afterwards.
Anke, I don't have words to thank you for all your wonderful Tabblos! You put a lot of work (in the field, and at your computer), and it really pays off! I can only say: "Thank you!"
Take care, my friend, and live a long, long life, and at your usual full throttle, because you make the world better!

Thank you, tack så mycket et merci beaucoup to all of you. It's a great pleasure to write and create these works for you. Fabio, for finding flower names are books a great help that sort them after the colour of the bloom. Best are those with larger photos, because sometimes drawings look so similar that you can easily mix up plants. If you have the latin name than can either google the translations into different languages or you try out www.leo.org - an online-dictionary, which has an astounding quantity of vocabulary available.
Mirella said at 3:04 p.m. on Aug 10, 2009:
your love for Nature is astonishing.Well, I dont' think I'll be able to telle you my emotions in English. Fabio said a lot, I want to double it and say: Grazie, merci, thanks, dankeschen, spacibo (спасибо), gracias.and so on. Ciao, dear friend.
Moorlerche said at 3:36 p.m. on Aug 11, 2009:
Mille grazie Mirella and everybody.
What I was so fascinated of, was the fact that within quite short distances you never seemed to find a place that looked like the other. I think I have never experienced such a shifting landscape before.
