Penang Little India During 'Ramadhan'

Among indian muslim food, dessert is one of my favourite. Lots of sweet smelling spices are used. After a meal, drinking a glass of hot fluffy milk tea is like a ritual.

Come the month of Ramadhan, Muslims all over the world would observe the fasting month. The fasting is the prelude to the muslim new year we call 'Hari Raya Puasa' in Malaysia. They will observe this ritual for a month, no food nor liquid may be consumed from dawn to dusk. Most people today don't cook at home during the fasting month, so, it's more convenient to buy and take them home. During this period, food outlets do great business. When if comes to food, it's more of a celebration here. Lots of people from other faith join in the celebration. I took a walk through 'Little India' of Penang with my camera of course and I hope that you will enjoy viewing the scenes.

Indian muslim food is full of curry dishes. Full of spices but not really hot unless a lot of chilly powder is use.

Little India is full of products imported from India. anything from cooking utensils, spices,DVDs to fashions, which is the beautiful sarees.

After abstaining from food for the whole day, it is very important to break your fast gradually or you might throw up whatever you eat. The most sought after food is the sweet dates imported from the middle east. Coconut water is also very refreshing and hydrates our body well.

A great mix of street life, full of colour. Some of that food looks delicious. Fasting through the day must make that evening meal so much more appetizing and enjoyable.

A heart felt thank you to PAT,DEN, NEU, FOGUINHO, SEAN, GAMS AND AUBREY for your encouraging comments.

GAMS, in Malaysia it's very multi racial and religion. Some Indians here are muslims as well as hindus, buddhist and christians. Indian Muslims are famous for their 'nasi kandar' - curry dishes. A must try if you are here.
