- A SAD STORY -

A sad day during my trip to Indonesia. It was 8.45 in the morning. We were on our way to Bangsal to catch the ferry to Gili Meno. We were driving along the northern coast with our motorcylce when we saw hundreds of people in the ocean approximately 100 m off the coast...as we got closer we could see a beached whale. Everbody was excited including myself. Never had I seen a whale in my life before. The water was red from the blood and I did not know whether it was still alive or not. I decided to walk up to it. Big relief when I arrived...it was still breathing but seriously injured. Half of the crowd had already decided on the whale's fate...KILL. A brave expat along with the other half, mostly young people, was trying to persuade the elder to try to save the whale while they could still kill it if it was to weak to survive. Finally they decided to wait until high tide (approx. 3 hours). I could not wait until then because we had our ferry to catch. My thoughts were with the whale all time. When we came back from the little island late in the afternoon we stopped at the place...it was deserted...I was hoping the whale made it...we asked an old man...he answered the whale was too weak and they had to kill it....R.I.P

I wonder when someone will look at us and say: they're too weak, lets kill them all. Well captured story...

Poor whale, it must have suffered a lot. In a way, sacrificing it must have been better than let it bleed in pain till death. Pic #6 looks like a requiem for this wonderful animal. RIP (probably in these people's stomach...)

anybody would have do it anyway a fast death better than prolonging the agony....

A sad end for this magnificent mammal. Although well documented in your photographs.

These pictures are impressive. I always saw those images on TV and never for photos. And also never heard such a story ends with the rescue of the animal, it is always down. I wonder if the man is too lazy to work that leads to save it. Thanks, Patrick.

Poor whale! They could get him into the water and help him...I feel so bad when any of life creatures die... Thanks for sharing.

Patrick I've missed so many of your wonderful tabs being gone this summer. Quite a few just this past week.

I actually didnt want to view this one but I LOVE ALL ANIMALS so much that i was HOPING this was a 'saved beach whale' but the red on it everywhere didn't look likely - was thinking maybe paint? hope springs eternal......he either struggled so hard to get back out or was accidentally hit by a boat/ship...who knows? You can never save a whale that injured and obviously already grievously in pain. I WOULD HAVE VOTED to immediately (in a humane way if possible there, which is not mentioned how they killed the poor thing) as Louise said and many others, end the obvious agonizing suffering.

Rest in peace poor thing and yes, if the people needed the food so be it. xo Patty

Excellent reportage Patrick. It looked terribly injured, poor thing. What a magnificent creature, but sad for you to see it under such sad conditions.

Like Patty, I was hoping the red was maybe paint! It looked way too injured to survive, have to wonder how it was injured so badly.

Thanks for the reportage, Patrick. It's a big problem for animals and human beeing: let them die in great pain or help them to live life without suffering ? I myself would prefer for me the second hypothesis. Ciao
