Son Volt @ Paradise

After spearheading the alt country movement with Uncle Tupelo, Jay Farrar pursued his vision with Son Volt, who recorded three landmark albums in the ’90s before the groundbreaking artist put the band on extended hiatus and cut three solo LPs. Farrar assembled a new lineup of Son Volt in 2004.

American Central Dust, Son Volt’s third album in four years (Rounder, July 7) marks the apotheosis of both the Son Volt dynamic and the rigorous aesthetic that distinguishes Farrar’s entire body of work, in which classic and contemporary elements are fashioned into arresting new shapes.

Happy bday and have fun at HSB! Say hi to the DBTs for me. Maybe you can post some pix of the new guitar. I like electrics better than acoustics myself (though I don't play). Jay and his amazing guitarist James Walbourne had some very nice Gretsch electrics and one twangy Telecaster. The lap steel was very cool, too. I could touch it from where I stood, although they do frown on that...

Jay will be doing a few shows of songs he did from "Big Sur", the upcoming Jack Kerouac documentary. There's info at sonvolt.net. Also, if you don't have it yet, their new one "American Central Dust" is very good.
