WESTERN SPOTTED ORB WEAVER

I've put up tabblos of these before, but last night, this pretty good size Orb Weaver built it's web

two steps outside our front door. So tonight, I went out to get some shots in the eerie, red lighting

our front lamp created on it. Enjoy!

Close-up of the spider's "chest plate" I guess you could call it, although I really like the details revealed in the upper right-hand corner of the shot.

Close-up of the spinneret

Jumbled up leg-mess.

This is as close in as I could get on the back of it's hairy, bumpy head.

Some of these with the flash were a bit more blown out than I would've liked, but I was still happy with the overall composition and how the web looks in this one, so here it is.

I'm just pleased that they don't grow the size of dogs:) Great pics of a weird and wonderful creature.

Beautiful close up; the poor spider was certainly very frightened, but the result is excellent !

Thanks for the comments, everyone. The spider was actually freakishly un-frightened, believe it or not. Once or twice when I bumped the web while trying to cross underneath it, she would scurry up to a high corner and hide, but she'd come back down within like a minute or so to wait for her next kill..
