Chobe National Park, Botswana

The Chobe national Park is rich with animals, it is also very dusty!.

Impala are knicknamed the MacDonalds of the bush. There is one round every corner!

I love this signpost! Botswana, Zambia, Namibia and Zimbabe all have borders in this reagion. We arrived in Kasane from Livingstone, Zambia

They even have the M on their backs!

A collection of bones at the entrance to the Chobe National Park

Wide open plains alongside the Chobe River

Note, these Zebra have an extra stripe!

The Lilac-breasted Roller. This stunning bird is said to be the inspiration for the colours in the Botswana flag

The Flag of Botswana

The Kudu

Probably my favourite Antelope

Maribou Stork (also known as the undertaker bird))

White-backed Vulture

I wonder who cleaned up this head, maybe one of these two birds!

This was our first close encounter with elephant

Lunchtime at the river, our boat was pulled up here and we had a picnic close to these magnificent beasts. We stayed on the boat I hasten to add!!

Red-billed Hornbill (Zazu from the Lion King)

Yellow-billed Hornbill

Coucal

African Jacarna

Black Open-billed Stork

This hovers over the water and then dives down for fish

The Pied Kingfisher

Yellow-billed Stork

Glossy Ibis

Blacksmith Lapwing, so named because its call sounds like the hammer hitting the anvil

sacred Ibis

African Spoonbill. I had long wished to see this bird, so I was delighted to see it in Chobe.

This Cormorant looked as if he didn't know what to do with the catfish.!

Double-banded Sandgrouse

White-headed Lapwing

Gymnogene

White-billed Bee-eater

Carmine Bee-Eaters

We got rather fond of Warthogs, unfortunately we saw several after they had been caught by lions and leopards!

Roan Antelope

Hippo cause more human deaths in Africa than any other animal!

At least this little one seemed to be awake! They spend their days asleep wallowing in the water and come out at night to graze.

Buffalo

A rather less fearsome Water Monitor

Water Monitor with a large snail

Bushbuck

Vervet Monkey

We were just returning to camp when our guide took us to see a Leopard that had just made a kill. It was almost dark so this was taken with a very high ISO. It was just fantastic seeing this wonderful creature! It was licking it lips after supper of Warthog!

The end of an amazing day! You can just see the Baboons in silhouette

This is not a tabblo, CELIA, this is an encyclopaedia! All your photos are naturally classic, elegant, making me wonder if the animals knew they were not posing for an amateur, or for an ordinary tourist. From the giraffes to the lilac-breasted rollers, what a fascinating tour! Thank you for sharing such beauty with us.

Celia--I have just totally enjoyed this wonderful tour of the the Park--while all the shots of the mammals are excellent, I just love the bird shots. The one you captured of the hovering Kingfisher is outstanding. the variety of birds is amazing. A birders paradise.
Hollyridger said at 7:26 p.m. on Sep 24, 2009:
Simply wonderful, Celia. I have a brother in S. Africa so I have been to the continent several times. I never get tired of seeing the exotic animals and birds. Some of the birds you have seen are new to me, for example the bee-eaters and the gymnogene - what a great job you have done! Wonderful photographs and well chosen layout.

Noreen, thank you, I am so glad you have had the opportunity to experience life in Africa! The Bee-eaters are incredibly beautiful. We saw a bank of thousands of Carmine Bee-eaters nesting which was incredible, unfortunately it was dusk and the photographs don't do them justice!

Oh Wow! What a collection of photos you have here! I like how the skulls at the National Park entrance are almost like a warning, "Enter at your own risk!" I like the way you capture the subtle colours of the wildlife in your images and the last shot, with the baboon silhouettes, is absolutely perfect!

This was our first camp. We had a full day safari here which included a 3 hour river trip which was certainly the highlight of this part of the trip. We saw the greatest number and diversity of birds and animals here.
